Ascension X 2.5D fighting game in development

I see…

Dealing damage to yourself seems kind of extreme for spamming moves. The first fighting game we’re doing (not the one with transformations) also has a form of spam control that differs between characters (as they have have different special move stamina). Once the threshold is reached their attacks would suffer less damage, slower start-up or longer recovery. The ‘stale’ effects would be made evident by visual and audio cues. While I don’t think spamming an attack is bad per se this decision is mostly based on keeping things interesting between two fighters. Conversely, there is a way to buff special attacks that aren’t used often, ‘Fresh Bonus’. I wanna make sure there’s something about the system that can be used to promote the ‘conversation’ between players.

Do you think you could write up a general gameplay summary of your game? I wanna imagine playing the thing in order to comment further.

I see you use Z-Brush for your modeling needs. Will you be using 3Ds Max or Maya for the animations? Just curious, BTW, since my little brother takes interest in 3D modeling as well. :slight_smile:

The game concept sounds very nice. Though the part I’m going to enjoy the most is the combo system and more importantly, how you balance the characters in the game! :open_mouth:
Hopefully it will be a footsie heavy game that gives the opportunity to pull off some crazy combos (combos similar to the new Killer Instinct). Of course, it’s entirely up to you to decide how your game is going to work; just throwing in my $0.02.

Ok I’m doing a small write up of my story and characters. we have 5 main groups in our story. we have 1 big human city the size of a state with various districts that is ruled by strict catholice religion. With a very young innocent pope and two adviser. Gabriel the good adviser, who leads a peacekeeping force Fedis. We then have Elijah ( more in depth about him later) a old and evil arch bishop who wants all out war. He is also the real leader of Pities a evil origination that tries to cause war. We have a human regular army, and the black steel. A group of orphans trained in combat and forced to wear mask and armor. They defend the walls of the city and make sure nothing from the forest enters the city. we Then have the forest which is the strongest group. Ruled by a wise and beautiful Empress who wants peace and have lived of thousands of years. “spoiler alert” ( in our story she lived in our world, before the forest grew out of control, she also has ties to Elijah).

the story takes place as the conflict between them. for characters we have

Captain Aker leader of black steel and a weapons master. uses sound based attacks, ultimate move lions roar

Claus the second in command of Fedlis, he uses 7 swords, and a teleport and flash step technique.

Claire the close friend and love interest of claus, he has a trowing weapon and a spirit cat, that’s her oldest friend and help in attacks.

Gabriel the leader of Fedlis he uses a sword and lighting attacks. Dies in the story

Dietrich a high noble that summons black crows to fight, and has mind control. he is the second in command of pities. his nickname puppet master, as he can control people. He is also the only one to know Elijahs true identity.

Aurora a blind assassin that can use her shadow as a weapon, and has a spear. shes under deitrich mind control

Pulse auroras twin she uses two tonfas and light based attacks. Her ultimate technique is called kaleidoscope.

Dead End a failed experiment that can’t die. he heals from attacks and uses his blood as a weapon. he can also deal damage delt to him back at his enemy under Dietrich control and carries out dirty work.

Mimic another experiment that can uses all of the characters attacks. he can turn into a silver version of them. also under mind control.

from a village at peace with the forest we have tatiana a young girl trained to fight by her grandfather. she was then forced to fight him to the death. upon defeating him she gained the ability to summon a giant spirit version of him to aid her in battle.

from a district that was almost wiped out we have Elric the hero of our story. ( power under development) story written around him.

from the forest we have Lycan the general of the forest armies. He can turn into a 3 headed werewolf called Cerberus

we have Myst a ninja that is the protector of the empress he can turn into the kraken a water based monster who use water and freezing technique. and wait for it 6 pairs of nunchucks. hes ascended form has more than 1 set of hands.

Rin a mobile of the forest who is half human. The rest of the forest hates her but the empress took her in and gives her assignments. she can wrap power in the shape of dragons around her fist and use kung fu. her ultimate technique is dragon strike.

we have iris a beautiful forest warrior whois very blood is poison. no man can kiss her. she can turn into a plat and uses vines and drains health/ she also uses poison attacks.

Gameplay, man, gameplay! I’m on the edge of my seat here.

does it have just defending? otherwise not playing :mad:

Ok gamplay. I have skecthes with 4 bars
we have a health bar which depleted you lose the round
underneath it you have a refillable energy bar. different length for different character. You use special moves it depletes your bar. but it refills, the stronger the move the more energy you lose. if it reaches zero u cant use specials anymore during that match. ( so no fireball spamming)

you have an ascension menu where the more you block the more it builds up. it has 4 levels, level 1 is empty, level 4 lets you transfom. you can use a level to break a combo or do an enhance move. ( example would be Lycan use his transform wolf claw.) or Tatiana an bring down a spirit sword.

once transformed your ascension meter is a new cage to monitor your transformation. You only have a set time in transformation mode and the more you get hit the more it deplits. the more you attack the more meter u can build. its also important to note if this bar is at 100 you can perform your character ultimate attack. ( think Bankai from bleach)

the entire game is combat based similar to mortal kombat where u can string your own moves together. we are planning 100 combo where if you have the right meters you can start in normal mode and finish in ascended mode. but the whole thing will be a 2d fighting game thats combo based.

Not sure what you mean by just defending, but I do have characters that defense based. In fact Iris is a great defense character who can drain opponents.

I think he meant parry like in Garou: MOTW.

gottcha where working on it, we are mentioning weapons a lot but they wont be the basis. the main point of the game is finding the character that matches your style. so even though aker has a big sword and reach Lycan is much fast and really in your face. so this will play more like the new killer instinct or mk 9 where some characters use weapons.

You mean like a Custom Combo? MK uses pre-set combos, which are also called Target Combos in Street Fighter. These are a string of attacks predetermined by the the character design. Jin Kazama’s Kazama Style Combo is essentially this. Stringing together your own moves (if I’m correctly understanding you) is something akin to a Custom Combo, often a ‘super attack’ thing.

A 100-hit combo may be tedious to both player and viewer.

yes i agree the 100 percent combo will be, it will also only be for the most determined. right now developer not sure he can add it, so not worrying about it right now. we are planning a few moves to open combos. such as dash moves for pulse. she will then have 3 or 4 different moves she can do or string together for combos. This should allow the player the chance to create their own combos. not 100 percent unique, but a few different options to keep things changing.

What’s the button layout so far?

standard buttons layout but are implementing a system similar to killer instinct where u can simply pause and remap your buttons. I might like to add if we raise enough money we will include a character customization so you can make your own fighter. However make your own fighter is so far down the list it’s not worth talking about.

  • Are the attacks being High and Low in terms of actual high/low vertically speaking, or in terms of strength (weak/strong)?
  • By “open moves for combos” you mean attacks that deal heavy enough hit-stun for follow ups, yes?
  • Is the throw button a bind setting? Or rather, can I throw by pressing U+O or Y+A?

I would like to see more story than everyone wants to have a tournament. Some story’s that are actually important and just good.

I dislike how some can be so repetitive. and I completely hate zooning and spamming. However I do understand that they are gameplay styles.

Thought about shifting the game release to Xbox One? We’re going for XB1 and Wii U, exclusives for each, no ports.

well going to do a PC demo of the highest quality, and do a closed Beta and kickstarter. If we get enough support and feedback then xbox 1 for sure. would be a dream come true.

Questions about the controls.

Why a block button? Back to block is so much better for 2D fighters. Block button eliminates cross ups ad left-right mixups and makes defense too strong. This usually leads to having to implement other offensive systems to make up for it.

Can the game be played with only 6 buttons? Some of us use custom arcade sticks that only have 6 buttons, not 8.
