I think those are back when Ono was talking about how the game would show battle damage on the character as they got hit, like bruising or an arm not working as well as it should after being hit so many times. Since it was brought up really early on and got dropped before we saw Chun-Li, makes sense for Ken and Ryu to have prototype-y art of such a state.
(Btw a tangent, but I gutted Capcom Classics Collection’s FF and SF galleries and tossed them his way too. He’s got most of the FF artwork up atm, check his updates page).
Really with they would have kept Rufus as a brotha. The fat fuck is just awful to look at, I even hate playing against him. He doesn’t have a happy trail, he has a happy freeway.
They gave the original Rufus outfit to Ken as an alt… shame.
Vipers alternate with the shorts could have been godlike  and why does some of this art make me wish I could have at least seen a concept version of SFIV if it would have been 2D with HD sprites or something.
Dang they wanted to make a fat black dude, but still didnt happen. Wanted to then make a brotha a shoto, that didnt happen. Gave his outfit to ken, lol. Viper was dark skin too in some of the beginning concept art, that changed too.
Man, that early Rufus concept looks pretty cool. Too bad he turned out the way he did. I don’t really mind Rufu’s character, but Capcom could have made him look cooler at least. He’s the only character out of the SF4 cast that looks fucking stupid imo.
Ya…rufus and el fuerte to me are wasted spaces…could of brought out a yin or yang type character and a black shoto…at the very worst those are better then what we got
If they kept all of Rufus’ moves the same but ditched the idiot fat white jackass in favor of a badass black guy, I think we’d see a lot more Rufus players.
^ What this guy said. One of the big reasons why i dont play Rufus is because he looks so weird. He plays really well and is very fun but theres always the fact that he isnt really that cool a character overall…
That concept art of him looks 10x better, and would have been a very different ‘shoto’ too. Damnit Capcom.
that monk character looked very promising but I bet they thought there was already too much overlap with the other characters so they scrapped him. same with the stages too - I bet they realized it took too much resources to get it just right or ran into some problems so they had to tone them down. That Blanka jungle stage looks AMAZING with the crashed plane and dangling Blanka shorts.
kinda off topic but it’s about SFIV art: there’s this art piece in the official guide of Sakura throwing a hadouken but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else. anybody have it or know of it? It’s in her section.
agreed they should have kept that. actually i was disapionted to see them do away with the character specific levels, it was part of the games mood. going to different places and getting to learn more about the character just added to their mystique.
You guys seriously would’ve wanted another shoto character? I’m glad Rufus turned out the way he did. He’s completely new and fresh.
On topic, I wish that Capcom would go back to some of these concepts and create more alternates. Cammy definitely needs that red scarf outfit and Seth needs to have his human look.
WTH are you guys talking about. Rufus is a badass.
EDIT - K so, I saw the fatass black guy with spiky hair. That shoulda been Rufus’ alternate instead of making him look like a freakin’ girl with pigtails -.-
