EVO’s over and with that a new wave of players has been inspired! In order to kick it off, I’ll be running a free tournament for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition v.2012, The King of Fighters 13, and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. The main goal of this tournament is not just to have fun competing in fighting games, but also to celebrate our AZ scene and help it grow further. The idea is for the newcomers to get a taste of the tournament scene in a comfortable, low-stakes environment and for the seasoned vets to have a nice relaxing cooldown after EVO.
Entry is FREE. For each tournament, 1st place will receive a $20 gift card and 2nd place will receive a $10 gift card to Gamestop. These prizes will be coming out of my own pocket, and so any donations from the community to help cover them aren’t necessary but would be appreciated. Team hAZmat, NFG, and BasedArcade have also been kind enough to donate their respective t-shirts to the winner of each tournament.
The tournaments will take place at the University of Advancing Technology, room 206-207 on July 28th. Here’s the tentative schedule:
12:00 Noon - Casuals for all games (Probably at least 1 setup per game throughout the day); All side tournament signups
12:30 PM - Street Fighter 4 signups
1:00 PM - Street Fighter 4 tournament
2:30 PM - KOF 13 signups
3:00 PM - KOF 13 tournament
5:30 PM - Marvel 3 signups
6:00 PM - Marvel 3 tournament
Please keep in mind that it is cough traditional for tournaments to run late. We’ll do our best to stay on time but this schedule is tentative for that reason.

Second Chance Tournament
In keeping with the spirit of welcoming new folks, ALL tournaments will run a Second Chance Tournament. This tournament is a completely new tournament with a bracket made during the main tournament. During signups for the main tournament, I will ask you how many tournaments you have entered before for that particular game.
You must meet two qualifications to be entered into the second chance tournament:
- You are eliminated from the main tournament by going 0-2 or 1-2 (As in, not making it past the second round of the tournament).
- You are new to the tournament scene for this game. The cutoff for this currently is that you have attended less than 3 tournaments for the game. I will try to be flexible on this, as it greatly depends on the number of entrants to the tournament. The goal is to not have the second chance tournament filled with veterans who had a bad day. As much as we love our veterans, they’re used to losing and this bracket isn’t made for them to take advantage of.
This bracket will have the same rules as the main tournament, except it is SINGLE ELIMINATION. It will run simultaneously with the main tournament once the bracket has been made. The winner of each Second Chance Tournament will receive a $10 Gamestop gift card, courtesy of Mash Up!
All tournaments will be run using Challonge. Feel free to check the brackets as you see fit, and they’ll be saved afterwards. I’ll write the URLs on the white board when we start the tournaments.
If you have a setup and a game that you’d like to run a side tournament for (3S, GG, SFxT, etc), please let me know and we can work something out in the schedule. Soul Calibur V and MK9 are excluded from this list, as a tournament by Euphoria Gaming will be running for those games right next door to us. Please go support them, we will accommodate as needed.
Side Tournaments
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown Tournament - Double Elimination
-2 out of 3 games; Winners, Losers and Grand Finals 3 out of 5
-Default Settings (Timer is 45 seconds; Default health is set to 220; matches are best out of 5 rounds)
-Loser can change character and/or pick a random stage (cannot directly pick a stage of choice)
-Only banned character is Dural
-Console: XBox 360
-First place will receive a $20 gift card, Second place will receive a $10 gift card.
-BOUNTY Prize given to the player(s) who knock SF Punker into Losers and/or out of the tournament (don’t get TOO excited, probably just $5 gift cards)
-Tournament entries will be capped at 16 players (due to only one set-up) so first to sign-up in person gets in
-BOUNTY Prize (Inspired by the LA Akira): If you face SF Punker in the tournament, for every GAME you win off of him you will receive $5 Cash (Ex. Knock him into Losers = $10; lose the match but went 1-2 against him = $5)
The requests:
-It would really be appreciated if you could bring an Xbox, a copy of a game, or an ASUS Evo monitor. The more setups we have, the more casuals we can have throughout the day and the more fun everyone will have.
-Please respect the venue, don’t leave trash everywhere and be respectful of the occupied rooms around us
-Most importantly, please, PLEASE tell your friends about this tournament! The purpose of this tournament is to bring new blood in, and while our scene has the usual channels for recruiting people (FB, SRK, etc), word of mouth is always a great way to get us noticed. This isn’t a super serious, hardcore competition, and anybody is welcome!
Shoutouts to Steve Gannon, T-Dot, BasedArcade, Team NFG, and Team hAZmat for helping me out with this. Y’all are great.
Any or all of this information may change as we get closer to the day of the tournament, since there may be some more details that need to be hammered out. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, feel free to contact me here on FB.
Thanks for your time! Let’s have a great tournament!
