Are digital downloads the future?

Coppola was part of the wave of filmmakers that essentially showed Hollywood’s old establishment the door. The post-70s period hasn’t been great to him, but it’s good to see that he’s still in touch with his ideals.

Digital downloads may cost less money for distributors but it costs more money for me. All the memory used for saving game progress is now being used for games, and I’m forced to go shell out 20-90 dollars for more memory to store the games in additional to the 20-60 dollars I spend for the auctual games. I don’t have the alternative of playing on a disc when I’ve ran out of memory, and I doubt they’ll ever give me the option of putting it on a disc as this could lead to more pirating than usual.

Shelf space is cheaper than memory space.

^This is true.

It’s also not convenience buying most games from the online store. If you’re like me and don’t trust account providers with your billing/credit card info you’ll end up going to a retail store anyway to buy points. Then when you get home, you gotta stratch off the number, put it in, and wait for the game to download as oppose to just popping the disc in and playing off the bat. If it’s an xbox original or a rare title (MVC2) I can see the need for it, otherwise I like to buy the disc and get that new box smell.

There are many pros/cons to disc vs. digital distribution, but if other industries over the last 10 years is any indication, the video game industry will also be moving heavily in that direction (this generation is a strong step towards that, imo). 10 years from now, I think discs will still be around, but digital distribution will be heavily supported and aggressively pushed (much like streaming Netflix, downloading itunes, etc is today versus 5-10 years ago).

The theory and concept, on paper at least, of digital distribution is fantastic, but it’s the details like DRM that will potentially stunt it’s growth potential.

Physical copy for the reasons mentioned. I wouldn’t mind switching over if digital downloads were cheaper. Looking at the PSN Store though, the prices are exactly the same even though I’m not getting a disc, book, or case. That’s just stupid. I don’t use Steam cause my computer is absolute crap. Lining up at 12AM? No thanks. Maybe I’ll just go in and buy it the next day. Furthermore, I don’t like the amount of control digital downloads gives game companies.

Also, I sell games for way more than they’re worth online to stupid people. So there’s that.
