If Zangief SPD’s you and then does Banishing Flat to close the gap, you can U2 during his recovery frames.
Banishing flat is green hands right? [S]And I assume you mean light SPD cos the other ones ( I think) push him too far back to close the gap.[/S]
[S]Either way - that’s huge.[/S]
I’ve been using this for quite some time, I guess I assumed it was something that everyone already would have known! U2 also catches that bullshit whiff crossup knee drop pseudo-vortex mixup. If it’s timed as a true safe jump, you will catch him during his landing recovery, and if he does it slightly early to setup a meaty 360 grab or kick lariat (to catch your wake up throw tech) it will catch these too. I only use this against Giefs who I know love to go in hard. If I know the Gief is gonna lame it out once he has the life lead, I always go for U1 because of how effective it can be at punishing whiffed lariats on reaction. So for me which ultra I pick depends just as much on the player as the character, with regards to Zangief. But if I was at a tournament and was about to play an unknown Gief, I’d probably go for U2 just to be on the slightly safer side.
Oh who am I kidding? A safe side…? In the Gief matchup?!?
St.HK. That is all.
No but really, if the gief is heavy into footsies, you can attempt to throw out cr.hp and have it CH / trade with gief st.mp…then you get a free link to u1. its relatively viable too (see IkeTakeda vs SnakeEyes @WNF)…but is by no means something that is a stand by in this match.
Far st. HK often trades with Gief, which is never a good idea. I prefer far st. HP, far st. MP, far st. MK and cr. MK as anti-Gief pokes. But in random poke wars, you will even lose or trade sometimes with Gief with those normals and banishing flat or even walk forward SPD can punish whiffs.
Check out the videos Kreymore posted of him Vs. Aquasilk to see just how ugly this matchup can be.
I tried testing this with a LP green hand. Gief can still jump away. Am I testing it wrong?
I tested it again and you are right. The only way it works is if the Gief player wants to do a frame perfect meaty st.MP that you can’t flip out of. If he does Green Hand immediately then U2 will miss. However, if he neutral jumps or jumps away from the U2, it’s a free escape for you. Also, he cannot pursue you at all (No Green Hand, no SPD, no,st.MP, no backdash either, since he is still on the ground during the first few frames). So just having the Ultra stocked is a threat to Gief. The problem is that you will have almost no way to stock it without taking at least 450 HP. And level 1 U2 is only 369 damage. So the potential trade off is still unfavorable. ;(
Corner Carry: Back Throw then Command Run.
