To me the core gameplay is too simple and boring but I can appreciate that other people enjoy the honesty of it. That said, I don’t see it being considered one of the GOATs, especially with it being a critical and commercial disappointment and with all the backlash its received. It might never shake that stigma. Games can live and die and leave a legacy from their launch alone.
SF5 received generally positive critical reviews, and commercially it may not have hit the mark initially but it’s a grower not a shower. It will definitely reach its sales estimate and exceed them but over a longer period of time. We’ll know for sure by the end of this fiscal year next April.
SF3: NG was not well received (at all), but what grew out of it in time - SF3:3S - became unequivocally one of the GOAT fighting games.
Some option selects were pretty cool, but crouch techs were pretty dumb. You couldn’t shimmy the same way you can in 5 and you couldn’t walk forward against characters like Chun and Bison to throw them, ever.
Once new players get a tournament and an Evo experience under their belt and out of their system… I bet they’ll begin to cool off and quietly drift away from the game or find another hobbie/not be as invested
Was at WNF and I saw lots of people opt out of the tourney to play Pokemon instead LOL
I look at YouTube videos of say, Ryu vs Ken in SF5 and it looks like the same shit I’ve been watching for the last 20 years - fireball, fireball, uppercut, tatsu. I don’t really see the changes in the game, just the same old shit from the last 20 years.
I know there are completely new characters like Laura but the game still feels boring and repetitive.
You know what I would like? Yeah, people will laugh, but I would like to see another game in the Street Fighter EX series. I know Capcom don’t own the rights to the characters but I would still like to see the game happen.
Skullomania oh yeah!
And make the game in full 3D, just to piss off most of the ‘2D only for fighters!’ crowd…
The way Capcom is handling SF5 you would think they want it to fail. I think the censorship is a curse they will not recover from. What they did to Juri and the recent Cammy censor in the latest patch is just crazy. No Street Fighter wants to support censorship.
What about alternate colors locked up under a broken half-assed barrage of nonsense. I cant even play ranked because of the rage quitting, they even rage quit in casual.
Capcom’s biggest achievements with SF5 is finding ways of working harder to lose sales and kill hype.
SF3 was a commercial disaster too. Look how loved it is now. I wouldn’t hold too much weight on the release hype. Capcom has been pretty good lately at repairing that hype anyways.
How SF5 is right now is the way it should have been released, imo. The state of the game is much better than it was in its first two months. It’s a shame that USF4 had the potential to be the premier game for another year, or at least another EVO, but Capcom killed it for a product that was very much unfinished at its release.
Anyways, are any of you boys going to EVO this weekend? I’ll be at Bally’s and not until Saturday unfortunately, but if anyone is willing to come out there, I may open my room up for casuals. It’d be great to meet some of you guys. I’m probably gonna have some of my NLBC friends over at some point, too. Also, I don’t have a Sunday pass, so I’m probably just gonna fuck around that day.
