Shounen is garbage because 90% of the time it’s shallow as fuck storytelling with mediocre sometimes cool fighting. Shit like Bleach and Naruto are popular not because it’s good, but because it’s really easy to read/get into, which appeals to a lot of youth that haven’t really developed better taste just yet.

You could say that X GENRE IS GARBAGE about every genre, sure, but 90% of anime/manga is garbage in general anyways. People tend to grow out of watching/reading shounen because the story telling is pretty eh at best. Even slice of life series are arguably written better than most shounen stories.

Woah woah buddy, i can’t tell you how many times its the same socially awkward boy going after the same awkward girl who happens to be prettiest and most well developed girl in class. I’d even take naruto over that. At least with Naruto they are trying instead of recycling the same formula again, and again, and again, and again, to the point where you can’t even see clear differences between these shows.

Ugh it shows how little you know that you spelt Fairy ‘TAIL’ wrong. To be fair Fairy Tail used to be a decent shounen for me but too much Nakama Powa etc just made me lose all respect for it. One Piece on the other hand is one of the best mangas I have ever read/currently reading, if one of your reasons for not liking it is that it’s too long, Luffy’s power is stupid or that he wins all the time you can just GTFO.

This should go without saying but as with all types anime and anime in general: Not all of them are the same. It’s like disregarding an anime like Kuroko No Basket or Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood or Hajime No Ippo just because you watched one episode of Fairy Tail or Naruto and thought ‘hurr durr all shounens suck’

I watch my fair share of Fairy Tail. A friend of mine tried to get into the show a couple of times and I walked off unimpressed each time. Good for you for liking One Piece. I find Luffy annoying as hell and there’s isn’t a character I like on that series. I can expect for it to last as long as it did seeing as it had a vague premise to begin with.

It’s all the same, really, although some do it better than others. However, it’s pretty cut and dry with shounen. Bad guy appears, gotta beat bad guy, get beat up, gotta go train, fight bad guy again, random plot armor, beat bad guy, etc. It’s how you present it and make it interesting that matters. Unfortunately, series like Bleach and Naruto are meant for kids and don’t really offer much of anything more than what you see on paper.

It’s pretty hard to believe Naruto trying to be deep or go beyond the generic shounen formula that has made it popular among kids for so long.

I’d put shows like Queen’s Blade over most shounen because it doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t: shit.

honestly i would put fairy tail above most shounen, i like the team work, friendships etc, shit that usually isnt well done in most shounen. nothing beats DBZ anyways, so all this arguing is dumb.

I think most Shounens are good for a good portion starting out, but they just drag on for too long and have too much filler. It’s like nuggets of gold in a muddy river and the gold slowly runs out and then it’s just mud.
Zabuza part of Naruto was really good. Manly tears were almost shed :sad:
But around ep 80 I dropped that show instantly and never looked back.

One Piece… Very dragged out. Read manga at the time, but just couldn’t make it through… There was some part in a desert or something that just wouldn’t stop. Can’t really remember. I think I mentioned stumbling into a live stream once - I watched 10 eps of Luffy running towards Ace and screaming.

To say these shows are crap though are a bit dramatic. They obviously have some merit, compared to the utterly generic real crap. At least, for me.

Here’s a suggestion: After a shounen show is over they should make a condensed version for oldies like us, with all the filler and longwinded shit taken out. Like, take those 100+ ep shows and condense them into half or a fourth of that.

i’m following naruto still just because interesting things are finally happening. before that point, it was dragged out, boring shit for years.

bleach is objectively shit, one piece’s formula is really tiring and predictable, but it has its moments. i probably like HxH the most though. but yeah sure, shounen is garbage, etc

at least there’s the occasional hot doujin of characters from shounen series.

The shonen genre targets a young male audience; it’s not suppose to target males in the 25+ age group. Shonen also branches out beyond the typical “super power lets fighting love!” that everyone is generalizing here. There’s probably a bunch of shows that people like here that could fall under the shonen genre.
