So I’m watching Ano Hana now. I’m feeling this show more than I thought I would, despite it being another story about awkward high schoolers. Probably because the show immediately establishes that these kids are messed up from the get go, and using the power of nostalgia, this is about how they’ll unfuck up their lives. I’m just surprised that Anaru is my favorite character. She’s flawed, but she’s hesitant to sell out or give up on her childhood friends. And she dives right into the Menma business, almost without any skepticism, probably because she wants a return to her childhood more than the rest of the cast.
Poppo seems like a bro, but I’m not easily convinced. I’m betting that his southeast Asia adventures are bullshit, or even delusional. I hope he isn’t though, because that would just make him boss if in the middle of the developing love polygon brewing in the group, he’s like, “fuck y’all, I’m gonna pound some Cambodian bitches for a week. Peace.”
