Just got 9 episodes into ***Puella Magi Madoka Magica. ***It’s a lot better than it looks in the pictures and descriptions you get at anime encyclopedia.If you like dark twists of familiar genre’s you’ll like this, and to be honest I can’t stand watching magical girl anime’s that’s why I skipped over it till I saw a clip the other day that made me have to try it out.
I’m just hoping the ending doesn’t suck.

Dog Days fucked up by having a completely adjacent devolpment from what it building up from. Plus it was resolved so quickly. You disappointed me Seven Arcs.
Still not feeling Ano Hana. Just a bunch of kids who keep crying on command over how dead Menma is. Not much anything else going on other than that. Like I said before if Poppo was the main character, show would be done in under 6 episodes or less.
I actually wouldn’t call madoka a magical girl anime. if you look at the anime from any perspective, it’s handled as a huge antithesis and a huge fuck you to the traditional magical girl archetypes. The “magical girl” is only a cruel exoskeleton, and a good tribute to the actual genre. For example:

the biggest thing is that magical girl anime tend to emphasize friendship, team work and the lovey power of togetherness, all episodes tend to have friendship problems conquered and a common enemy defeated. In Madoka, there is not one scene in the actual timeline (though the opening misleads it) where all the girls are fighting side by side. Actually, no “two” girls in the series ever even fights alongside each other to defeat a common enemy, their problems are realistic and too heavily circumstantial to ever be reconciled as hard as they try. In magical girl anime, the sidekick creature (kyuubei) usually plays a pure, supportive and light role to the overall storyline…and then there is kyuubei. The huge divergence of good and evil is not to be found in madoka either. Kyuubei is not evil in any sense as he is just a necessary force of the universe.
Also, no one “dies” in Magical girl anime, especially not in a crude fashion some characters suffer. In another signature progression of MG anime, the main character experiences the most growth magically, she is the first to get her costume and her power growing is evident in every episode that she fights. Madoka is powerless in 90% of the series, but her growth doesn’t come from any physical combat. I’ve also never seen a MG anime that I would call somber or dark in any sense, people usually hold hands in the end is what I’m saying.
Overall I think that it’s one of the most genius and welcomed anime in a long time.

True it’s not that easy to categorize, but how would you even categorize it for the sake of identification?
it should be reclassified as… “the only good mahou shoujo anime”? 
but that’s a good question…it’s like when you classify Eva under mecha, there are just certain anime that are too unique to be really associated with the history of any genre. To be honest, there is just as much of science fiction as there is magical girl in madoka. Because the series was marked under mahou shoujo, I didn’t even give it the light of day until I had trusted opinions vouch for it. Plus all the madoka commercials that aired during arakawa really worked on me I guess haha.

While I love ano hana I really could care less for Menma and so seeing every guy being head over heels for her induces the rage within me. I was hoping Jintan and Anaru would hook up at the end but now I dont see that happening.
