Man imagine if you were an anime kid. You’d have no parents… which would be pretty kick ass and kinda suck at the same time. I guess ideally, you wouldn’t have parents when it would inconvenience you.
What’s the Gunbuster OVA about?
Anime parents are unnecessary for the most part. All they’re good for is to provide some timely parental guidance to one or more of the main characters when they’re feeling down or uncertain. Or being some person of great importance long ago that’s supposed to imply why the main character in a long running shonen manga is so great and where he gets it from like:
Naruto’s parents
Ichigo’s Dad
Goku’s Dad
Yusuke’s "Dad"
Negi Springfield’s Parents
Baki’s Dad (seinen but it still applies)
Or they have some sort of strained or bad relationship with their Protagonist child:
Shinji’s Dad
Kazuma’s Dad (Kaze no Stigma)
Baki’s Dad
Tomoya’s Dad (Clannad)
Overall, anime parents tend to be characters with some sort of personality quirk for comedic effect like overprotectiveness or jumping the gun or saying “ara ara” and dont really make much of a mark in the overall story. It easier to just write them out altogether from the get-go (and sometimes bring them in just to say they exist then take them right back out)
Its a cliche I dont really mind. I rather they not be there at all than be there, but barely be around, or be there, be interesting, then never be around again. Thats why I like Nagisa’s parents from Clannad. They’re there, they’re pretty funny and they’re important characters to the story.

There should be an anime about the parents that live overseas and left their Japanese child to fend for themselves back in Japan.
