This playful young grey seal was pictured with a flipper raised in the air as it lay on rocks on the Isle of Man.
The shores of the island are set to become swamped with the seals over the coming weeks as this year’s birthing season gets into full swing.
Britain is home to nearly half the world’s grey seal population - and the Isle of Man is one of their favourite places to rest and give birth.

zookeeper dives into swimming pool followed by 450lb tiger for thrilling show

A brave zookeeper has taken a real leap of faith - into a swimming pool with a fearsome tiger.
Daring Jeff Harwell, 30, dived into the water closely followed by 450lb Bengal tiger Akasha to the astonishment of visitors.
The pair amazed crowds with their ‘romping and splashing’ in the 50ft pool at Out of Africa Wildlife Park at Camp Verde in Arizona, United States.

A fisherman has told how he befriended a seagull after it followed him home from a voyage.
Ron Ifield, 70, struck up an unlikely bond with the bird - which he has named ‘Herbert’ - when it landed on his boat during a fishing trip in the Thames estuary.
After handing him a scrap of fish the plucky herring gull then flew into Mr Ifield’s cabin, sipped from his cup of tea and nestled up to him on his bunk.

Mr Ifield has denied claims from neighbours that Herbert has attacked pets and stolen sweets since his arrival in town

A large section of coastline in South Africa has been closed after a 15-metre whale washed ashore following an attack by great white sharks.

Underwater photographer reveals incredible picture of alien-like ocean sunfish

You never know what you’re going to find in an old folder: a long-forgotten Polaroid snapshot, a yellowed love letter, or in the case of a Brazilian underwater photographer, a rare image of a moon-shaped giant fish taken two years prior.
The image depicting the slow-moving, otherworldly Mola mola, or sunfish, was captured off San Diego by Daniel Botelho, and it became an instant hit after being posted last week on his Facebook page.
‘It got 1,000 ‘likes’ in 36 hours,’ Botelho, an award-winning photojournalist who specializes in underwater photography, told GrindTV.

A white whale which learnt to imitate the voices of humans may have been trying to make contact, scientists believe.
The male named Noc had a distinctly human-like voice, much to the surprise of scientists who previously thought whales typically produce sounds in a manner that is wholly different from humans.
Noc died five years ago after 30 years of living amongst dolphins and other white whales and being in contact with humans at the National Marine Mammal Foundation based in San Diego in California

The researchers analysed the vocal passages of a white while to discover how NOC made the unique noises.

The researchers constructed a special ‘listening post’ so they could hear the whales clearly

]The mother of a 2-year-old boy who was mauled to death after falling into an exhibit of wild African dogs won’t be prosecuted, but authorities are still investigating the zoo for possible criminal negligence.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said Wednesday that Maddox Derkosh’s death at the Pittsburgh Zoo was a ‘tragic accident.’

Zappala said the boy had vision problems and wore glasses, and that’s partly why his mother, 34-year-old Elizabeth Derkosh, had lifted the boy on a railing to view the pack of African painted dogs in early November.

Victim: Maddox Derkosh, two, was killed after falling 11 feet into the dog pit at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

Cleared: Authorities said Elizabeth Derkosh, center, was not at fault for the ‘tragic accident’ that claimed her son and would face no criminal charges

Predator: Derkosh was killed when he fell into a pit of African painted dogs that mauled him
Zappala said witnesses described the boy lunging forward, as if he thought there was some sort of clear barrier to stop him.
The boy fell and the animals immediately pounced on the child, who bled to death.

Tragedy: Neighbors recalled Maddox as a sweet boy who could often be found playing on a swing set with his cousin, who lives nearby

Safe: Pittsburgh Zoo successfully completed its five-year review in September, which means it meets or exceeds all safety standard

At rest: At Maddox’s funeral his parents asked friends, relatives and other mourners to donate toy construction trucks in the boy’s name, to be given to a Christmas children’s charity
