You’re faster… can you give me a lift? Photographer captures heartwarming moment cheetah cub hitched a ride off a sibling

When they grow up to become some of the fastest land animals alive, these adorable baby cheetahs won’t need a lift to get from A to B.
But as they are still growing, a couple of these young big cats opted for a cheeky piggyback off their siblings as they scampered around Tanzania’s dusty savanna.
The playful ten-week-old cubs were practicing the renowned sprinting skills which will see them reach speeds of 75mph when fully grown.

Off you go: A cheeky cheetah hops on its sibling’s back as the young group race around the Tanzanian savannah

Time for a climb: As well as showing off their already enviable sprinting skills, the cheetah cubs showed off their climbing abilities when they scaled this Tanzanian tree

Leave me out of it: At one point photographer Paul captured the cubs playing with a less-than-amused adult cheetah

Well it probably does look a little bit like a nesting box if you’re a Blue Tit! Bird hatches three tiny chicks in pub’s cigarette bin

Men have long since visited the pub to check out the local birds - but you’re likely to find a totally different kind of chick in this drinking hole.
Staff at The Green Man, in Welling, Kent, were stunned when they discovered that a Blue Tit had hijacked a cigarette bin in their beer garden.
The plucky bird clearly wasn’t put off by the smell and made a makeshift nest out of feathers, twigs and moss.

You gotta friend in me-ow: Fox cub blinded by car accident becomes best buddies with three abandoned kittens

Everyone has heard of the fox and the hound but it’s not every day you see these cunning creatures hanging out with cats.
But for this injured fox cub an unlikely friendship with three kindly kittens may well have saved his life as they kept him warm during his recovery at Kent Wildlife Rescue centre.
The fox had been found with severe head injuries by side of a dual carriageway in Sidcup, Kent, after he was hit by a speeding car on April 11.

Agonising death of the King of the Jungle: Young lion doomed to starve after poacher’s snare got caught so tightly round his neck he couldn’t eat

Wire snare caught so tightly around his neck he cannot eat, this young male lion is doomed to die a slow and agonising death.
Within a matter of days he will be lying in the African bush gasping his last breath.
Nor is he alone in his grim fate. The sight is increasingly common in parts of the continent when a growing number of lions have fallen victim to poaching.
Some wander by mistake into snares that are meant for other animals such as antelope which are hunted by poachers for bushmeat.
Desperately injured: The young male lion cub was spotted in Mikumi National Park in Tanzania with a poacher’s snare twisted cruelly round his neck

Doomed to die: The wire was twisted so tight that the lion was unable to eat

Weak: The animal was so sick it struggled to raise its head as park wardens approached

Lucrative: Many of the snares are set by poachers who then butcher the animals for their parts which are used in traditional Chinese medicine

The final journey: The lion slopes off into the long grass of the park where he would soon die either of starvation or infection

Meet Florence, the world’s first vegetarian shark who prefers celery sticks and cucumber to fish

A shark at the Birmingham National Sea Life Center is surprising her handlers - she appears to be the world’s first vegetarian shark.
Florence, a six-foot nurse shark, started life as a meat-eater, but following an operation in 2009 to remove a rusty hook from her jaw, she has completely stopped eating her normal prey.
In fact, her handlers need to resort to devious tactics to get protein into Florence’s diet - such as hiding pieces of fish inside her celery, and even in hollowed-out cucumbers.

It’s often an idyllic summer scene - skipping through flower-filled fields of colour as the sun beams down.
But anyone considering a jaunt through this particularly glorious display of bluebells may want to think twice, as the wonderful summery scene is part of a lion’s enclosure.
Even so, in the age of 'elf and safety, safari park keepers felt the need to state the incredibly obvious to its visitors, as they erected a ‘do not pick the flowers’ sign metres away from the fearsome-looking big cats.

The 10 most painful stings on the planet, by the self-sacrificing man who tried 150 different varieties in the name of science

Most of us will have felt the pain of a bee sting. Luckily most of us will have avoided the dreaded pain of a tarantula hawk or a fire ant.
Justin Schmidt felt all three of these - and 147 other horrible, burning sensations - after a dedicated life-long career devoted to insects.
On numerous fieldwork trips, The University of Arizona entomologist would find himself digging up living colonies of creatures, who in turn were not happy with this destructive human scooping them into bags - and promptly sank their fangs, stingers or pincers into him.
Still, no pain, no gain, and Schmidt turned his experiences into the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, ranking 78 species in a list which, while subjective, was put together by the man who must surely know best, ranking their pain on a scale of 1 to 4.

**RATING: **4+
**SCHMIDT SAYS: **Like fire-walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch rusty nail grinding into your heel.
He also gave un-scientific-sounding but apt descriptions for each pain, for instance the sting of the yellowjacket wasp felt ‘hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.’.

According to io9, entomologist May Berenbaum described Schmidt’s char as: ‘A scale from 0 to 4, in which 0 was defined as the sensation of being stung by an insect that cannot penetrate human skin to 2, a familiar intermediate pain (honey bee), to 4, an intensely painful sting.’

The male dog stayed by her side for more than 14 hours before Animal Control removed her body and now, they say, he is still so depressed he may not be able to find a home to adopt him.

And far from being just having muddy paws or a light covering of dust, the hapless animal was completely covered in a thick layer of dried sludge from head to foot.
