Not all moves/combos do as much stun as they do damage, it’s best if you have both high damage and high stun options off an opener and can decide.
3S was king when it came to stun, you could stun relatively easily, the reward was immense (no scaling), and most of the time it still didn’t necessarily mean instant victory.
SF4 is alright, and from what I hear it’ll get closer to this with ultras like Denjin that actually deal stun.
What I find silly about the SF4 stun system is that a lot of times NOT mashing to get out of it is better because the dmg scaling continues. Whereas if you get out of it and get tagged by that lvl 3 focus into combo it hurts way more.
I don’t mean to sound as if i’m bitching about losing, although losing to Guile makes me want to bitch, regardless of who i’m playing as. I rarely play as Gouki, so I almost never encounter stun when i’m playing as other characters, so i’ve just never stopped to think about why it’s in the game. I was just curious.
Again, i’m not crying. No need to attack me for being curious.
In SF4 I find that u can recover pretty fast from stun. So for me (Akuma player) it’s not that bad (and when i get stunned I deserve it). But it also can be funny when they try to punish with FA (or any other slow hard attack with no invulnerability) and you can recover in time and punish with Ultra demon. I caught some Guiles that tried to HP (but were a bit late, hehe) my stunned Akuma.
This. And on the other hand Ultra meter rewards those that get hit. As said before, damage scaling does its part to weaken those combos that follow up a stun. So I’d say its pretty counterbalanced (in a certain way). No need to cry about stun.
Personally when i play to stun characters i aim to do it in a single (Or two) strikes. So working out a rough estimate of how much stun you’ve alreadydone is good. Here’s an example.
Akuma
HP -> LK Tatsu -> Cl.HP -> Demon Flip Reset -> Dive Kick -> LP, LP, MP -> LK Tatsu -> HP SRK = about 900 stun
ths means a throw will stun them, giving me a near full damage combo during dizzy. obviously if he blocks the set i’ll opt for soemthing safer after the MP.
& in nearly every case it’s better to continue a stun combo with a jump in hit rather than a Focus (Thanks to scaling)
Stun makes you think about just one more thing while your thinking about the match.
to me it adds intensity to the match, adds to the things you have to watchout for, therefore making street fighter more exciting.
how fun is it to watch someone land a beastly combo and then gets a stun, then they continue their combo. when pros do it the crowd usually gets hyped.
and stun is perfectly logical in that Both players are capable of stunning. and if you watch really good gouki players like momochi, you’d see how good gouki’s stun potential is. he’s the type of character to can get stunned, but can also stun right back.
the seth-gief matchup would be almost unwinnable for gief if he couldnt stun seth with one counter hit headbutt.
but yea i think most people have the right idea…its a reward for being able to string combos toether in a short amount of time. a reason to try to keep the pressure on.
Got stunned yesteryda, Blanka(me)vKen. I tried doing that thing where you hop towards them and hopefully you can do the airball at them, but he caught wind and shoryuken my ass and proceeded to super me real hard. Got stunned eventually.
He totally deserved. Usually when you get stunned its because you fucked up or he did really well.
‘To facilitate the execution of already facile combos for abject scrubs who cannot implement a succession of moves on a non stationary, combative target.’
Whats with the hate for stun?
Yes, stun makes it easy to land combos on a stationary target… But to me, that’s the purpose of stun.
You rushed down your opp, you deserve to have him standing there like a dummy.
I can’t believe no one pointed out the balance aspect yet. (except for whoever mentioned the Gief and Seth matchup)
Seth K mentioned that they balanced Seth by giving him low stun tolerance and low health points.
Gief can continually rush down because it takes a shitload to stun him.
Of course, why Dhalsim, Guile, and Vega have low stun, I’ll never know. Of course Capcom fucked Vega, we already know they did what they could to shit on him, but the other two? I imagine Dhalsim’s low stun was to reward those who got through his zoning.
I was thinking about asking if you’d like some cheese, but I suppose I already have the answer to that…
As others have said, Stun is twofold: it rewards a player for outplaying your opponent (Sablicious prefers ultra’s to stuns apparently) and simultaneously punishes your opponent for not reading you properly. If you are playing in such a manner that your opponent has a great deal of trouble figuring you out and just eats everything, then the stun kicks in to seal the round and (hopefully) guarantee victory.
I think some people are pushing off Stun as some kind of mechanism to reward people who are vastly superior to their opponents–yes, against someone you are much better than, you’re getting that stun every round, but playing my equivalent I can still occasionally land a stun if I’m really fucking with his head.
Stun has very, very little to do with the aggressor (contrary to what Sablicious is saying) and everything to do with who got stunned. Not getting stunned in this game is simply a matter of blocking for a second or two, or just walking away. Stun is -not- cumulative and rapidly degenerates if it’s not acted on, a great deal faster than it did in games like 3S. All the aggressor has to be able to do is execute a succession of moves on a non stationary, combative target. Otherwise if they couldn’t, the stun wouldn’t have occurred in the first place.
I’m with this guy - I think stun’s more for balancing rather than rewarding good play. How to balance out the awesomeness of Gouki/Seth? Give them low health and low stun bars.
I also think they gave Guile, Vega, and Sim low stun bars cuz they prolly originally expected them to be super duper zoners. On a side note, I believe sim had the lowest stun bar in CVS2 - I’ve seen 100% stun combos on him.
