American Football 2019 Thread:

As a Giants fan, I would like to thank the goober Eli (and the defense) for two more rings for the franchise. Even with the questionable throws throughout the seasons, looking back they’re kind of funny.

Now lets see if fumbling Danny Dimes will bring New York another ring.

Can we all agree that Eli isn’t a HOF’er? Super Bowl rings should not get you into the HOF unless its some godlike amount. He was only a Pro Bowler 4 times and was the definition of slightly above average his entire career but won some games on the back of a godlike D a few times at the right time. Kinda like Jimmy G of literally right now who I told someone yesterday reminded me of a young Eli oddly enough.

I think he will get in but he really shouldn’t. Rivers and even Flacco should get in before him and thats saying something. Ok not Flacco but using being eccentric to prove my point.

Cockblocked Brady twice.

I dont think he was all that great either but he stopped Brady from having 8.

The debate about Eli Manning as a HOFer is one of my favorites. In the regular season he was an above average league QB who was an ironman. He also has the 11th most wins of all time at the QB position and is 7th and 8th in passing yards and touchdowns respectively. In the playoffs, he has a fantastic statline and the advanced metric in “clutchness” by superstar statistician Nate Silver has him as the clutchest postseason QB of all time. He not only won 2 SB’s, but he also won 2 superbowl MVP’s. He also holds the record for most yards in a single postseason run.

With that said, he was never an unquestioned top 5 QB in his era and he was a debatable top 10 QB during his time. He also finished his career going .500 and in his last 3 seasons in the NFL went 9-25 as a starter. He’s basically a better version of Jim Plunkett who won 2 SB’s with the Raiders in the 80’s who isn’t in the hall of fame either.

Eli’s in for his performance in that “Football on a Phone” commercial

Exactly.

His name alone will get him in at one point but he should be 10-15 years away at the minimum but it would not shock me to see him in 2025 getting in either because he is a Manning. It will be a true test of what the HOF really means. To me he isn’t a HOFer… A Giant HOFer yes and #10 should be retired this year and he should be the best ever of NY. Like him and Marshawn Lynch should miss together or join together because they are the same thing for different positions and I think Beastmode should get in first.

He’s finished.

I like the debate because he is the metaphysical manifestation of what it means to be a hall of famer. He has surprising stats to back him up like being top 10 in all time passing, td’s, completions, win’s and consecutive starts. But he also has stats like win-loss, low percentage of playoff appearances, low percentage of pro bowls, no allpro selections, top 12 most int’s and never was a top 5 QB. If that was his resume he’d be an absolute “No”. But he also one of 5 2 time superbowl MVP’s which he won against unarguably the best Coach and QB of all time.

If the answer is yes then I think he becomes the new “minimum requirement” of what it takes to make it. If the answer is no then championships will get de-emphasized when looking at requirements going forward.

Yeah honestly it is a great debate. Eli is gonna put the HOF Credentials to the test.

Does the media love him? Is he a well regarded QB with championships?

My guess is he gets in within his first three years ballot eligibility.

Wouldn’t shock anyone because he is a Manning. At this point at least have fun with it and let him become a HOFer in 2026 or 27 depending on when Brady retires and let him get in with Brady. Like if your main claim to fame is beating Brady twice it only seems right to put them in together.

Kingslayer.

lmfao i love this debate too. but to me its not only beating brady in grand finals its the road he took to beat him his second ring win was fucking unreal he beat ultra instinct prime rodgers and a stacked as fuck 49rs team

This new players are soft, man.

Playing smash. He suck everybody’s dick too?

Eli definitely not a HOFer. Dude finished with a .500 record. He simply doesn’t pass the eye test either.

I’ll say what I’ve said elsewhere. Eli is a modern version of Jim Plunkett. Both were above average QBs in their respective eras that managed to win two Super Bowls. I honestly don’t even know why the Eli HOF discussion is a discussion. He’s not close to a Hall of Famer.

The reason it’s a “discussion” is because it truly calls into question two things. How much nepotism there is when it comes to HoF voters, and the weight of rings in general for Quarterbacks.

As mentioned, Eli’s Regular Season career…I wouldn’t even call it average, I’d call it outright bad. He had one or two bright spot seasons but otherwise was backup caliber in the Regular Season. However he was legitimately exceptional in the post season, not just along for the ride and he defeated one of the greatest, if not the greatest (I still think there’s a couple of teams above that 18-1 Pats squad but that’s a discussion for another time) team in League history in the Super Bowl with one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history. Then goes on and does it again a couple of years later with an equally ridiculous play in crunch time.

How much weight does the playoffs and the Super Bowl add to HoF discussion? Let alone his family name. Especially when you consider that there will be a few guys from his very generation that probably won’t get into the Hall because they were unfortunate enough to miss out on a ring.

If we’re just looking at pure stats then not only does Eli not make the HoF, the very fact that he’s even brought into the discussion is an absolute insult to those in the HoF. If we’re looking at accolades then the opposite is arguably true.

I wish that Eli getting in would finally get the HoF to be called out on their nepotistic bullshit, however whatever you feel about his play, Eli is universally respected within the League so I don’t foresee a ton of backlash if he were to get in hence I don’t really have a dog in this fight. People will forget about it for the next few years anyway until the voting comes up and maybe something will happen in that time frame to solidify which way they will ultimately go.

You are right there is a reason that there is a discussion, and the ONLY reason is because he won 2 Super Bowls and those 2 opponents were the dynasty Patriots. That is the ONLY reason. They were 9-7 both of those season and just got hot for 4 games, getting lucky as shit as well.

He is not even in the same stratosphere as the guys in his era who will be in the HOF like Brady, Rogers, Peyton, Breez, etc.
