Am I just not cut out for Fighting games?

what he said. Also I’d advice to focus just on one or two fighting games if you are a beginner. Since you play on console now I guess you either play MvC3 or SFIV and probably SFxTekken sooner or later.

Because I played the older fighters a lot, it is difficult for me to abandon them in favour of the newer fighters, hence it is difficult for me to focus entirely on SFIV and learn to apply the basics and specials to the best way possible.

Watch match videos, work on your execution and listen to top level commentary.

Don’t put your faith in 90% of SRK posters opinions because for the most part they don’t have a clue either.

My last bit of advice? Have fun. If you keep playing consistently, maybe 3 years from now you’ll be an expert player. But if you don’t think that you would have fun until you’re amazing then the work it will take isn’t going to be worth it for you.

I think the problem is here. Like most other people have said, you’re going to need patience. While you may think you have the basics of fighting games down, with less than a day of experience under your belt, I can most assuredly tell you that you have not. Don’t take that as criticism. We’ve all been there, you just gotta realize that you DON’T know what’s going on yet, and just expect that, with experience, it will come. Take baby steps.

Can’t find good combos? Do mission mode for some characters that you like (Don’t be surprised if you can’t get past some 8 or 9’s without working at it for a while). Watch some youtube videos.

Can’t figure out how you’re supposed to attack? Play some arcade mode, and slowly up the difficulty. Or even just find some online play, but go into it expecting to lose and learn, not win and be awesome from the start. I started learning SF4 by playing a friend repeatedly. Our sessions would go 20-0, then 19-1, then 19-5, and now it’s probably about an 11-9 split. I’m still losing to him the majority of the time, but I know I’m better now, and expect it to continue.

Also, as a fellow Marvel player:
This is the single greatest tutorial there is for marvel. Even though it’s for vanilla MvC3, a lot of the thought process involved still applies. Watching this really leveled up my game. It’s a long video, but I certainly recommend it.

In short, mastering fighting games, like anything that’s worth working for, will require commitment. As everyone else has said, fighting games are the one genre where you will lose like HELL when you start. Every great fighting game player started out getting bodied by someone. Everyone has been where you are, and we feel your pain.

If you want some help in Marvel, I can offer a bit here and there. I’m mainly focusing on SFxT atm, but if you PM me sometime and I have some free time, I’ll help you out. PM me if you’re interested.

^Thank you for the advice, I’ll try finding some time to watch this video.
