It was a proto. I need to test it in a stick with the whole Start+select=Guide functionality in; this one just needed the basic functionality and worked great.

I forget if ebay tracks bids in between the ‘max price’ bids – but bid inflation is against Ebay ToS. Potentially a fine and bid retraction if you report it.
It wasn’t inflation, you can tell by the date/time stamps. Someone bid like 150 when it was at 10ish. Dude comes along, bids, twenty, fifty, and so on, each time outbid by the previous. Normal stuff.
Now comes the sucky part. It’ll mostly stay where it’s at until an hour before it ends.
