Something of a rare commodity in speed runners sadly. I know alot of them get a large amount of unfair flack in the chat for not being the greatest talkers but he was a prime example of making a run fun and enjoyable to listen to.
The other run that really had me rolling was Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and the HYPE scream. I’d never seen that before and was laughing my ass off for a good 25 minutes afterwards. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
To be fair, it takes a lot of focus to run a game at that level and oftentimes some of the things they are doing technical and hard to explain. It’s hard to be funny when you’re trying to hit single digit frame windows.
Others act like they only see actual humans once a year and need to work on that but being funny and charismatic is just a bonus. Granted a big one.
That also doesn’t excuse the couch from being complete weirdos lol.
Indeed. For the most part I don’t mind the runner being quiet for the run and allowing his couch commentary crew to discuss or pointout what’s happening if they need to focus. Some try to hard to be funny and it backfires really hard (See the Crash Bandicoot 2 run). Ultimately I don’t watch it for the personalities but the performance and skill level displayed, if the commentary gets cringy then I have no problem muting or just ignoring it.
I just wish there was a little more hype from the guys running the games. Some I think broke a WR and their response was less than anything hyped. I guess this happens when you speedrun a game so often you’re used to having WR times lol
The guy who did commentary on BC Rearmd 2 was entertaining.
I continued to watch it because of his feedback. It didn’t sound like he was trying to be funny, it just sounded like he was trying to explain some of the glitches, but because they were so silly, it was hard to with a straight face. The yelling mentioned, for example.
Loved the fact that his friends mentioned that PJ always breaks games, it’s just his thing. And they were spot on with some of the comments and donation comments. I spent most of that afternoon just thinking “AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” thanks to that run. Spikevegeta was also the right guy to have on the desk to interact with that run. Him and Studio seemed to interact well with all the runners they were calling donations for, while others just kinda did nothing but read comments.
I thought ADGQ was better this year but I still really enjoyed SGDQ and always look forward to each marathon. Bring on January 2016 for some speed run HYPE!
I also miss the closeness of the audience on the stream. It was always something and was the main reason why the YSG (Blueglass) chat spam was born. But now with bigger halls and more space, you hardly saw most of the audience or heard them unless it was a hugely hype moment.
I’m kinda think this was an intentional decision tbh. Distant the live audience away from the stream because they’re scared of unexpected shit hitting the fan. Still didn’t stop that Crash Bandicoot shit though, lmao.
But yea it loses that grassroots charm and feel without the audience. Makes for a rather lifeless stream, like it’s just had it’s soul sucked out of it.
