Abel Match Videos

Yeah it was defintely a counterhit, you can see the message pop up.

Really liking Ojisan’s Abel but I’m guessing he’s still gonna main Sagat to get those wins?

watched 2 of the vids, dont ues the low ender for CoD, oyu did it a lot and he punishes you. if you are going to do this, do it randomly but dont keep doing it. also a lot of times after an ex tatsu or w/e he liked to jump, sakura jumping at abel isnt that great for abel so you shouldve just try jumping forward rh or fp at least once and if it hit he will think twice about doing it.

just few matches. thanks to inerd. he as more vids posted if you are interested.

is the ending of that second match the EX Rekka -> Ultra armour trick? Niiice, don’t think I’ve seen that in a proper match before.

Solid abel gunjack. I like the end of the 2nd vid. What was the input for that exactly? FADC or was it an ex CoD cancelled into ultra? The only thing I would suggest is to not rely on ex wheel kick too much, as it’s not that safe of a move when blocked and it doesn’t do all that much damage unless both hits connect, which only happens half the time.

haha nice armored ultra there

kevko5212 armored ultra its input i use is qcf+3p, then as soonn as its flashes blue (not yellow), qcf+3p again, first motion has to be exact and second motion must be fast. It can really change the match. Sometimes i get traped in the coner with fireballs or other long range normals and have only one ex bar and ultra. Given the chance i always go for it

If you predict EX bird kick, your best bet is a close range neutral jump. If they jump straight up, a chun favorite, you can j.HP it with good reaction time. If they backdash, you’re safe, if they EX bird kick on wake up, you can hit them with a well timed j.HK on the way down, or just press LK and it’ll hit. The counter is unorthodox, block then EX SBK on the way down.

That’s a good counter juicebox, I’ll have to do that. I’ve been baiting the spinning birdkick, blocking it, then using CoD. But if I guess wrong, they’d just wake up throw me, and I suck at teching throws, so I’d eat the throw 90% of the time.

Neutral jump hk will lead to all the same combos a CoD can, so I’m very happy you gave me this idea.

im at a loss for words… sigh

You rely way too much on cross up mk to c.fierce. Leaves you open to punishment when it doesn’t combo.

okay im not the best abel player but there was a couple things i noticed

0.46 - after a blocked tiger knee, you jumped away from him. i usually follow a blocked knee with either a TT or a regular throw and its seldom teched or avoided. i actually love sagats using tiger knee against me as its usually free damage unless their spacing is spot on.

0.49 - excellant oppertunity to finish the match that was missed as you wernt close enough , i know uv heard u say u have probs with cr.FP into FS but i think if youd gotten one here u could have won the 1st round. you probly know this already tho.

1.00 - EX COD, nice i like it, may have to try it myself sometime, altho a lot of sagats start with a tiger knee so would break the armour obviously

1.05 - after the air mk the reset would be a perfect oppertunity for a TT or EX TT, its good to be in the habit of grabbing people as soon as they hit the ground after a reset. a lot of the time the opp. cant react quick enough to throw out an effective counter. i also just noticed it on your honda game too, any time you yourself are reset in the air, a reversal TT as you land often catches people waiting for you to land on the ground.

1.19 - roll to TT, nice. do it more. youd be surprised how many people dont have a good idea of teh range that abel has on his rolls, you can cover nearly a full screen which can surprise

1.25 - enemy jumps over you with a missed attack. the enemy has a longer recovery period after a whiffed air attack, just long enough to throw out a TT or regualr throw. a tactic i use sometimes is a lk roll follwed by TT at the start of a match, as occasionally someone will jump straight into you and go over the top of you.

again im not the best player so there might be some errors in what i say, but i know any of the suggestions i gave will defo help at least a little.

my quick comments as i watch…

v sagat

  • I basically never use jump in’s to cr.HP. While the startup is only 1 frame longer than cr.mp, it def requires a deeper jump in to connect. Plus there have been times I thought it would connect and I could go for a falling sky, and it ended up missing and I ate a combo. At least with a medium button I know my follow up is CoD and if i really want to get an ultra or Falling sky in there I can cancel into it. Plus the vulnerability after 1st hit CoD is much less risky than whiffing the second hit of Cr.hp IMO.

-on jump in’s especially you should have time to hit confirm the jump in, and subsequent normal follow up. This should guarantee you never do 2nd hit of CoD on a blocking opponent.

-my game overall seems to have gotten a lot safer since I now opt to FADC into ultra juggles or falling skys. That and cr.lk poke strings mixups to throws/step kicks.

-canceling Cr.hp xx Falling sky. Gotta learn this, just can just mash it out if the timing is hard, assuming of course you don’t want to LK. roll prior.

-as was said before that blocked tiger knee was easy prey (2 hits = not safe). I def would have TT’ed there. I may have been tempted to go for cr.hp ultra, or cr.mp xx CoD ultra etc, but sometimes (esp online) i just don’t trust the timing and TT has never failed me.

-It should have been somewhat clear that the sagat had no idea how to properly fireball space, thus bait for good distance Rolls that would prevent you from getting standing RH or grabbed. He might even go for an uppercut or TK that would be clearly unsafe and punishable.

-Learn the distance to be on wake that is outside of their throw range, but inside of your LP TT distance. Then just block on wakeup. If they do a move, you punish. If not you can step kick them or throw. If they throw and whiff, you do whatever. I don’t usually like doing meaty attacks on wake, and almost never against people with DPs. I opted for late crossups (so the DP won’t autocorrect), or roll through them.

v honda
(in process, i know a good amount about the honda matchup. Only problem is that its heavily effected by latency online. as the timing on blocking headbutts changes a lot with latency)

match1:
-risky opening with CoD. Good chance they open with headbutt. If the do open with headbutt, go into training and learn which ones aren’t safe. if they do a FP for instance, you can reversal mp CoD as punishment.

  • I tend to be a whore of the Focus attack, but I try to not use it at all in this matchup. Random headbutts are a plenty, and honda’s poke range is so deep lots of times it won’t even land. Overall i just found it brings more problems than solutions.

  • 0:45 you did a decent move here neutral jumping on his wakeup. Lots of hondas will open with a buttslam which will own you here, but on the chance they don’t and whiff a throw, then you need to come down with a throw or TT of your own. Instead it seems you botched the j.HK and didn’t win right there.

  • Wheel kick is an attractive finisher that I also use, but there is always the risk that you eat an ultra or uppercut for it. Slow and fullscreen is not the place to use it.

  • 1:15 i think if you had reversaled’ that CoD it would have hit. Also, block that standing up. He can’t sweep you at the start, and not being crouched just gets you ready for an opening buttslam block.

  • You need to reversal ultra that super of his. Yes its a super, but its fullscreen! Easiest target there is!

  • You have no AA game besides blocking right now. no cr.mk, no cr.hp… nothing. Even if cr.hp trades, lots of times you will get the pop up and he will eat ultra for it.

  • 2:25 he whiffs buttslam in your face! you jump back!?! at least throw the guy! then he ultras you out of nowhere and no reversal ultra!

I think you need a little bit more information about the matchups and what they can do that really is safe. Throwing someone as punishment is a pretty simple concept, and it gives you a chance for wakeup cross ups (not reccomended VS honda and his buttslam though).

It’s a nice option select, either the ultra comes out or armored change of direction continues. Always worth trying it in that kind of situation. Gotta be careful tho, usually I get the armor and then it cancels into EX falling sky instead of ultra.

Oh wow I didn’t fully understand that it was an option select. Pretty cool

You can still get completely screwed by it. If they use a fast poke, they will recover and be able to block by the time your ultra hits. Since they hit an armored move, they can cancel into something else that is invulnerable (like a shoryu) and your ultra will miss.
But it seems that it’ll blow through 80% of moves and I seriously doubt many people are level headed enough to be able to get out of it since they’ll be going "WTF WAS THAT?!"
All in all though, it is still a nice last-ditch type of gamble. If you have the gauge for it, EX change of direction FADC to c.fp is a safer bet.

Actually no. When it hits, Chun will backflip through the air for a reset.

Of course, you get a mindgame off of this. You can dash up tornado throw, f.MK, or crossup j.MK. (Or whatever else you can come up with)

anymore videos of VER’s abel? I only see 2 on youtube.
