I remember waking up late that morning, had my alarm set to the radio rather than the buzzer which I didn’t often do. I was tired as hell, and didn’t feel like going to class; I knew I was going to just skip the morning English class and go to my 1pm class on time. Usually at that time in the morning I’d wake up to some goofy-ass skit on the Russ Parr Morning Show (lived in Southfield, MI at the time), but something felt really off listening to it that morning. There was this… surreal “mood” that settled over the cast, and I figured someone had died - it hadn’t been too long since Aaliyah passed as well, so I was already anticipating hearing the name.
They started getting text messages and calls from their connections in New York, about a plane crashing into the twin towers. I was stunned, and my first thought was “this confirms why I will never, ever fly. Accidents like this.”
I turned on the news thinking I’d see something about it there, something I rarely did but I wanted to know what was going on. Literally while I watched, the second plane hit.
If I had no idea of what happened before, at that moment I was mortified.
I didn’t bother to even think about school; my Aunt was due back in Michigan that day, as she’d been traveling and if I recall correctly she was due to fly out of Florida that morning. Eventually we got word that she was okay and of course grounded, thank God for that. But that day was just… I hate to use the same word so many times but, it was just surreal.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by that event. I can’t even imagine what the people that were there and lost loved ones are feeling.
legit foreign terrorists…I’m not blanket opposed to conspiracy theories like some people, but especially in cases like this, stupidity and blind ignorance go a long, long way towards explaining things moreso than the opposite. This is why Ayn Rand and the whole libertarian/objectivist(edit) mode of thought is complete garbage - our “best and brightest” leaders are actually spectacularly stupid, short-sighted, and uncreative, and they have no motivation to be anything otherwise.
The berlin wall fell not because of anything our government/CIA did, but in spite of it. Something that tremendous took our intelligence agencies completely by surprise - it was the opposite of what they were forcasting. Similar with 9/11 - low-level operatives knew what was going on, knew that these threats were imminent, but the higher ups had completely different agendas that had nothing to do with keeping us safe, and everything to do with keeping their jobs and their gravy train running on time.
So basically you don’t know anything about libertarianism, but you criticism it. There is nothing “collectivist” about libertarians, as a matter of fact the reverse is true.
