hmm, you bring up a good point, but that’s the Apple app store. 99 cent games are the standard
It’s likely that this is my last post in this thread so i’ll go out with a bang, This superficial idealism of used games is whatever to me and frankly to most who just want the damn game…seriously im not going to complain that there is no case if im hunting down Project Justice(thankfully I have it completed) but the point is, the game itself is the real prize in it all. Used games vary, like used cars or anything else that’s used. You find stuff that’s old or beat-up and you find things that are essentially brand spanking new or in mint condition…the idea of them being unappealing just needs to die out, but at this rate where used games seem that they’ll be dead next console generation…it’s too little too late.
Moving into the digital era, where physical copies of games won’t be the norm anymore one would think games would be cheaper right? Well, I’m unsure about this, Sony has had a firm pricing on digital PSP games for years and they don’t go on sale very often either, so i’m thinking…when Persona 3 Portable hit the network(about a few days after it’s physical release) it was the same exact price, WTF? im getting the same game but without a case and a manual(will all manuals be PDF files?) but it’s something I’ll always have as long as I have my PSN account information so thats a plus. The Point here is that, if PSP games didn’t go down in price, why would PS3/360 games go down? That’s just it, I don’t think they will unless the market it’self changes to help fit this move to full digital distribution as they should know people “Should” not pay $60 for a digital release.
This of course combined with the digital game not having portions of the game locked out as DLC or Online Passes don’t get in the way of things either, if we look at the big picture, we stopped paying $60 for games a while ago, their are few and far between when there have been complete games for $60…and this is bad news for us. Soon we will always pay $60 for the Beta Test, then $X amount for the completed game. It’s not just fighting games we are seeing this getting this treatment, it’s games as a whole. Our plan B in this situation used to be the Arcade(and for some it still is) However with Arcades being dead in most parts in the States, it’s not a practical solution…With the Digital age being closer then what we think it is. I’ll ask these last few questions to end with.
What will you do to prepare for this digital age? What will you do when it gets here? Are games still going to be your hobby/job/life when everything goes fully digital? These are question you should ask yourself and you can reply back answering these, im sure everyone has different opinions on this matter…I would like to see some peoples response to this.
Because the less money the publishers get, the less risks they will be willing to take. That means we get more of Call of Duty and not much of anything else.
That’s the App Store though and you’re talking about a lot of people who don’t play games all that seriously. I have to say the “freemium” thing sucks though. You download a 600MB game only to find that half of it is locked until you pay $6.99 to unlock it. Bullshit. Gameloft is the worst when it comes to this.
I think the App Store is going to be the future of gaming, or at least part of it. Publishers can make a ton of money because they don’t have to worry about packaging, and it seems like half the planet owns an iDevice, so there’s a bigger market for the games. Once the hardware improves, I bet we’re going to start seeing some pretty serious games on sale there. Things are already starting to get there as we speak.
Most games don’t get the absurd amount of development time Skullgirls got. It’s incredible how lenient the publisher was with Reverge, good thing it paid off.
That depends from developer to developer, not a one size first all sort of deal here. Publishers spend tones of money already with ads. and etc. if they have the money (EA, Sony, Etc) but smaller companies do just fine and produce enough sales to get by Koei is a fine example here as they do sell a fair amount of warrior title games a year and now they support them with DLC to continue a stream of revenue, and they still pop up with new IP’s from time to time. It just all depends on the company in question…not a generalization.
Eh, freemium isn’t too bad, you get something for nothing and can buy more if you like it, it’s like a better demo only issue is when companies try to copy the model on their full priced games.
I just hate downloading that big a file and then finding out I can’t really do anything with it. Make a “Lite” version or something, but don’t make it seem like you’re giving away a whole game free when you aren’t.
I’d like to point this out that this already happened. Original Xbox, you can’t re-download DLC and such you purchased previously. Though not many games had actual paid DLC (Mech Assault had paid DLC) so this isn’t too big of an issue for most people, you are still screwed out of content that you previously had.
It was a huge deal for the small communities that continued to play original Xbox multiplayer games. I have a friend that still played Phantom Dust at the time and he threw a fit. He had no way of saving the game’s DLC. The term “he mad” didn’t begin to describe his anger.
STEAM the fuck outta em!
Wonder what would happen if Valve released a “STEAMbox” of some sort…
Stock up on disk based games, pack up my consoles, play on PC until that gets fucked over because by that point consoles will be, and then enjoy emulation until I run out of games to play. Then, I’ll just find another hobby. I’ll vote with my wallet and buy disc based content (Not only games, I still buy CD’s) until I get outvoted.
No, this is wrong and used games aren’t killing the industry and they aren’t taking money out of publisher’s pockets.
I just dislike used games because of the killing Gamespot and EB get off them. New games here are 110 AUD (113.169 USD), used ones of the blockbuster games about two weeks after release will be $90, and you get given maybe $20 for your used copy. Its ridiculous.
Why do you even bother with the industry at that point?
3rd Strike
hey dander how are you.
value is interesting. right now i think all the value is in ‘new’.
6 months later games are 50% cheaper. that’s crazy.
a ps2 is like $50. blows my mind. soooo many excellent games to play there. and all those ghames are also probably under $20. or gamecube, or xbox. etc.
it’s just because they’re not collectors items, but they’re old. so they’re silly cheap.
it’s all about ‘new’. as for value though…look at the metal gear solid hd collection. if you havent played mgs 2, 3, peacewalker… it is an awesome value.
Either that or a whopping 7 tall cans of Tecate
Are you kidding me?
SFxTekken was an abomination…
o btw because people around my age tend to forget because they weren’t buying games.
games on snes and n64 were in many cases more than $50. especially in the snes era. shit only stabilized once psx was out for a while. before then it was crazyland. umk3 was $85. im sure of that.
