I think a 5 on 5 for marvel is a thing of the past. The dynamics have been the same for the past 8 years. It’s mostly based on politics, and less based on actual game play. We almost never send the best players AT THAT TIME. We send the popular vote, the entertaining guy, the guy who does semi-decent at majors, and leave out the actual best players. The marvel community doesn’t even get to choose their players, and when we do, a player drops-out or pushes for their friend to get a spot. I’ve been known to do both. It’s just outdated. The only time it was cool and mattered was the first time when the West took it down. Ever since then, who really cares? If we’re sending our 6-22nd best players to compete, who cares of the result? The east already has their big 5, but the west has like a top 10-15 that all could arguably earn or deserve a spot. Will our best 5 ever go? nope. All it brings is more division because people are insulted by not being on the team or even nominated. Me included. So I say, you guys should just practice together and get better for the actual tournament itself. Side events and money matches are cool, but if you’re not competing on Sunday, the weekend should be a failure.
But if this is really going to happen, my unbiased top 5 for the west would be:
Chunk (5th in Ohio)
Bill (4th in Ohio)
Chris S (4th at EVO and evo west championship)
Clock (9th at evo, lost to sandy twice)
Last spot up for grabs with a round robin between: Crizzle, Finesse, Illan, Me, Rowtron, Jmar, Genghis, Combo
If I missed anyone please let me know, otherwise these are the players that did best at evo world or post-world in tournaments.
Why I chose this list:
It’s easy, Bill and Chunk held it down in Ohio for the West. Their match was in the top 3 and their level of gameplay was the highest i’ve seen in a lonnng time. Chris S was the easiest choice, as he is the only one in the west who has the absolute best shot of taking down justin/yipes. After that I chose clock because his team is retarded and I don’t think EC can adapt. He’s an easy and convenient choice. He only lost to Sanford at evo, and should have been in the top 8.
ok thanks for the input guys… to really try and get this rolling lets come up with a date for the socal qualifier, im willing to help out in anyway possible as im sure others are. the good thing about having two tournies (presumably 1st, 2nd gets the spot) is the winners are soley based on who did the best and practiced. If its about having your personal friends on the team, train with them non stop for the quals. . opinion(mine as well) does not matter. so i say lets try and get these two CA quals arranged and planned ahead so ample practice time will be allowed…
in the mean time ill discuss with zach about seattle running their own quals
if i missed the key points of anybody’s post feel free to state them again, but so everybody is in agreement this team should not be pre-planned in anyway. quals are the fairest way, nobody gets a spot, they have to take one by winning. further suggestions anyone? thanks
i’m sure having just 1 tournament will definitely provide the most accurate results with regard to who is the best player to represent the wc against the ec
i don’t think i’ll be at fr this year unfortunately
I don’t know who from Seattle is going to Evo, since JMar is working building out his job, and I haven’t seen Row in ~3 weeks. I’ll mention it. I can’t imagine Kuan would go to play. Maybe if you convinced him it was a poker team tourney.
I had a long post ready but it was deleted. So I will summarize it:
-Administrators picked the team last year and it was a fluke: only 2 of the players selected cracked the top 20 and one of them was an alternate.
-It would be in the best interest of the WC players to have some players have automatic spots (as much as I don’t like giving out spots)
-Players great individual performances should be rewarded (for example, chris s. winning evo west and placing top 4 at evo world)
-Qualifiers set up an unnatural tournament scenario, which has pros and cons, but I believe the cons outweigh the pros.
-pros: forces players to play their best
-cons: the results are skewed (even in a round robin)
Some players not included will complain to no end, and are included. And if by some divine miracle that they make the team it will completely take away the legitimacy team; thus, leaving room for excuses and lack of interest. Also, the random factor of marvel gives the advantage to not-so-top-players.
Another thing to note, top-players are the ones that take the brunt of the shit-talking. We have to hear it all the time from our ec counterparts. In no way should people vote on spots, ever. Two ways to solve this (and the only two): Construct the team off of previous tournament results (especially in the recent past) or the marvel elites unanimously selecting someone on the team(even though this promotes bias, it has to be agreed upon by all the elites). I don’t really see any other ways to make this as fair as possible.
well being truthful here theres no one i think that is dramatically better than me PERSONALLY to get a spot on the team outright(chris s as just one example (clock beat me too) did beat me at evo, and has been doing well for a minute now as we all know) but speaking in the NOW ive been practicing consistently think i can beat anyone down here 2/3 or whatever the stipulation (thats the proper mentality of gaming anyway). And im sure the feeling is mutual amongst a lot of people (which is good). Honestly a regular bracketed tournament appears to be the only way (seeds can even be based off recent past results) in order to please the people that have been doing well in the past and continue to do so. And at least there’s 3 tournaments, so anyone from Socal could theoretically enter all 3 if they are so inclined to do so and vice-versa with seattle/norcal. This is all focused on getting the best wc team, and I say the winner of a properly seeded regulation tourney deserves a spot considering all the potential top ca players that would hopefully be in attendance. Feedback?
Also im going to discuss with officials to get this on the big screen as an official evo event to make the atmosphere even more enjoyable and competitive
