It’s more of a swinging motion than a flicking one and if you’re trying to flick the ball like a dart or something you will put a lot of stress on your elbow. A lot of people get into that habit because they’re trying to create speed solely using their arm and they’re not utilizing the other muscles in their body enough. One way to avoid that is to make sure when you draw your hand back for your delivery you extend your arm with the ball pointing away from your body, don’t fold it up alongside you near your chest like some people do.
Even professional pitchers sometimes get elbow problems. Pitchers tear ligaments in their arms all the time. You’re pushing your body to it’s limits to get the maximum velocity and that creates problems.
If you want to get really complicated you need to consider if you have a loose or firm wrist, you need to consider arm slots as well, where you throw naturally from with the least amount of resistance and what pitches work from that angle. It can get fairly complicated as in order to throw a certain ball you need to adjust where you throw it from to get the desired rotation but in doing that you telegraph what you’re throwing.
That bad flicking motion is exactly how I would describe my throwing motion. In terms of baseball, my throwing strength is on the weaker side of the spectrum. I’m curious to try out throwing like how you suggested.
You said you played Cricket right? That swinging motion you described reminds me of a Bowler (I think that’s the term) as opposed to a typical pitching motion.
Predictions LEGGO:
NLW: Giants
NLC: Cubs (You guys are assholes for not picking the best team in baseball to win their own division!)
NLE: Mets
ALW: LAA
ALC: KC
ALE: TOR
I think it’s going to be a really fun season. Another year of Cutch’s prime. Marte being fucking awesome. John Jaso is going to be a fan favorite I think, taking AJ Burnett’s place as the white trash looking dude that is weirdly good that us yinzers seem to love. JHay is one of the funnest players to watch in the league, he loses his helmet every time he runs the bases. It’s hysterical. Polanco is a candidate for a breakout season at the plate, he’s 6’ 4’’ 230 lbs at age 24 and was near the top of the league in hard hit ball %*. JHK may be my first ‘sports hero’ since… maybe ever.
If Cutch hits anything like he hit in ST and JHK comes close to the production he had last year… their offense is going to be really good.
I’m really praying for the Cubsiest collapse of all time for the Cubs. I can’t fucking stand Maddon.
- that stat is so new though so idk what it means, really. I’m hoping he figures out a way to get the ball out of the park more often. He only hit 7 homers last year but due to his size and how hard he hits the ball I think he can go for 20+ this year. Also, he’s the fastest guy on the team. But TOOTBLANS, TOOTBLANS everywhere.
In cricket you can’t extend your elbow more than about 15 degrees, you generate a lot of speed from your run up. In Baseball you can extend your elbow. It’s a natural extension though, it just happens as part of delivering the ball, it shouldn’t be where most of the velocity comes from. It still comes from your hip and shoulders. If you’re just flicking the ball my guess is you’re not generating much of a follow through? That happens naturally when you throw the ball with your bodyweight behind it and not just your arm. That follow through is what stops you falling flat on your face when your whole weight shifts forward onto your front foot.
Yeah, not much follow through on my end. It becomes way more evident when I tried throwing from the mound and the ball would usually fly high unless I consciously almade an effort to change my form. I think extending my arm out all the way and having a good follow through seem to be the two things I never really did. I’d say I had decent throwing strength as a person in general but in baseball, my throwing wasn’t really strong enough for 3B/SS.
Exodus, JHK was pretty fun to watch once he started to get the hang of things. I just hope the knee injury doesn’t slow him down.
That’s the fear. He did hit a home run off a yankees minor leaguer this week in his first game of playing defense, batting and running to first base. So that’s a positive sign. He might be running the bases and sliding by now or early next week. The Pirates head trainer said he’s never coached a guy that works as hard as JHK.
XKCD: What happens if you hit a baseball moving at 9/10ths the speed of light?
you def should not be flicking your arm from elbow down.
throwing from any position (infield can get away with some throws…for xampl the way tulo throws looks like it would hurt alot) is pretty much the same…the twisting of the body generates the power and the arm should be like a rubber band delivering the energy.
ofc its harder than it sounds
The Pirates middle infield in High A this year is now known as the Seinfeld duo - last names Kramer (2nd) and Newman (SS).
If you mostly want to throw from the field learn a good 4 seam power grip and how to find it from anywhere. It helps a lot.
Happy baseball season :party::party::party:
Finished mowing my lawn just in time.

As much as I dislike spring and summer, I can’t wait for Friday at Comerica Park.
Hype Sunday night game
They should schedule World Series Teams for opening day every year.
Good thing these two teams had little turnover (out of it, don’t know what happened to the Mets) making it a good matchup. & then the Mets have to sit around and watch Ring presenting ceremonies on Tuesday too lol
Went in 99
Oakland colisseum still had the “pee trough”
Ruined baseball for me (14). Or our dad not moving when some weirdo was eating a bag of peanuts behind us too close and that shit was blowing on everyone.
Better baseball memory at a game, Giants vs A’s, PAC-BELL PARK
Dad asks me, so who’s the Barry Bonds on the A’s? Giamb-- nah they don’t have one.
Then, just anyone who hits the most homeruns?! Nobody cracking 30. Couldn’t tell you.
What a baseball gods damned glorious day yesterday.
Beautiful weather #WeatherThread.
Teke walked by our tailgate.
James Conner throws out the first pitch.
Extension for Polanco through 2021 or 2024 - team options… I think it goes to '24 with the options.
Gregory proceeds to go 2 for 3 with a double high off the Clemente Wall - hoping to see a bunch of these this year.
10 K’s and an RBI (first of the 2016 MLB Season) for Flithy Frankie.
David Freese making plays at 3rd.
JHay made 2 or 3 productive outs.
Cervelli hits a triple into the Northside Notch - Vita Bella!
Bullpen looked great Watson/Feliz, they’re the strength of our pen imo, kept it scoreless.
Cutch catches the out to beat the ratbirds on Opening Day.
How many times this year will Cespedes botch a ball in the OF while looking like he doesn’t give a shit? I say…162.
Can’t say he’s the James Harden of Defense either
Since when he wants to, or he made his name from Left with the arm to gun down people at home plate.
The one last week where it (only kinda) got stuck, IDGAF, umps look at this (called live ball) was good tho.
One of his ‘highlight throws’ last year came against the pirates. He gave up a double to Sean Rodriguez by taking a shit route but sean-rod tried to stretch it into a triple and everyone freaked out about the throw and no one mentioned that it should have been an out in the first place.
