Regular season means absolutely nothing unless you do something historic like 16-0 or 0-16. The Falcons have shown time and again that they simply are outclassed when playing against good-great teams in high pressure situations (ie. playoffs). If you’re satisfied with a 10+win regular season team that always gets bounced in the first round of the playoffs, then you have some pretty pathetic standards.

In fact, their playoff history shows signs of regression. Their game against the Cardinals was competitive until the end, then their game against the Packers was a complete blowout just before halftime, and their most recent game against the Giants was just downright disgraceful (offense scored 0 points). Seriously, any Falcons fan that is clinging to their regular season record as to why they’re a legit playoff team… lol.

They’re past the point of a successful season being just making the playoffs. They’re in the same position the Eagles were before TO. Solid team that makes the playoffs every year and then has a let down. Matter of fact, the Falcons are in a worse position because even those Eagles teams won playoff games. Atlanta has to win in the playoffs to have successful seasons now. Having 10+ win seasons doesn’t mean anything anymore. They’ve graduated to, as Terrell Suggs put it: “You get it done or don’t get it done” territory.

Other teams in said territory:
Eagles, Steelers, Ravens, Pats, Saints, Packers, Cowboys

The only way those teams have a successful season is winning the Superbowl. Everybody else is still just happy to be there.

Cowboys are rare in that even though they haven’t won a playoff game in a long time and consistently fail to make it in general, they still have extremely high expectations on them. The Giants don’t make the list because they’re always the surprise team. They suck the majority of the season and then make a run, so anything they do in the playoffs is like icing on the cake.
