2010 SSF4 Women's Invitational: More Info and FAQ

Nice avatar.

We need Mepu(aka Girl Sagat) for this tourney. Where is Sabin, maybe he can get a hold of her :stuck_out_tongue:

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kay welllll . if a chick i know named burnyourbra a.k.a sola enters this shit . its prettyyyyyyy, prettyyy much over and if i see a chick who looks a lil like daigo in a wig im so pulling her hair just to check . . and for all u dude being dicks shut the fuck up already damn im gonna kneepress the fuck out of you guys

what about the choco girl from jap? guess she would win if she enters ;D

I think that the top 2 or so from the Women’s Invitational should automatically qualify for top 128 or whatever in the main SSF4, essentially making the Women’s Invitational into a legitimate pool.

Not only would it encourage more female players to enter the main SSF4 tournament, but it would help people take the results a little more seriously.

good idea

I agree with everyone that these stipulations make this much less of a sideshow and I sincerely hope it succeeds, but I’m taking bets on the over/under for how long it takes before some asshole in the crowd makes the FGC look foolish and sexist in front of media and the broadcast stream.

10 seconds?

I think this post from the FG discussion thread, before it was closed, very eloquently restated why novice participants, moreso than experienced gamers, at the women’s tourney might not feel comfortable with being put on display in what they perceive to be a male-dominated environment.

If the objective of the women’s tournament is to motivate the participants, and encourage viewers of the live stream to come to EVO next year, then I think one idea EVO staff may want to consider is making access to the women’s tournament area restricted to particpants only.

A restricted access area addresses several concerns:

  1. EvO staff won’t have to devote staff to policing the male crowd if the male crowd isn’t even allowed into the area in the first place. There can be a seperate area where the men and non-participant women can watch the live-feed, solving the problem of catcalls and heckling.

  2. After prelims are over, and Top 8 begins, the women’s tournament area can be made public to everybody, or moved into a different room that’s open to the public. This gives the novices some blanket of anonymity, while making sure recognition is given to the players who made it to Top 8. If there are any participants who (god forbid) joins the women’s tournament because they WANT to be paraded and put on display for men, they’ll have to earn it by fighting their way into the top 8. And besides, it’s not really a tournament if the crowd isn’t allowed to get a little wild.

  3. My guess is that the women will be more likely to build a sense of comradery with each other if in the early part of the tournament the men aren’t there to look at them, or not look at them.

It’s difficult to know a priori if the women and girl gamers will see these points I’ve listed as benefits, so any and all feedback is appreciated. One thing I’m not sure about, for example, is if the turn-out for the women’s tournament is poor, then if it will be more of a reason or less of a reason to make access to the tournament room restricted. On the one hand, less contestants means there’s a smaller crowd for the beginners to hide in, and on the other hand, it makes it harder to build up hype if there are less contestants. If EVO staff wants to make this event more low-key, like some people up-thread have been suggesting, then it may even be a good idea to make the entire event (prelims and top 8 included) restricted access to participants only.

Now that shit is properly explained, I absolutely agree with this. Nice initiative.

Can’t wait for the HYPE!

Well, I guess this does makes it sound like a better idea. Touch.

I think we need to get kayo police too. She has good viper and cute ^^

Just posting to say that I am all for the idea of supporting the ladies in the scene (and those who are interested in it) by running a tournament like this at Evo, and aiming to keep it serious, legit, and at the same time, hype. I hope that people won’t misunderstand and see it as a gimmick, “side show”, or other some such, and will be respectful so that the event can be a success. Also, I hope some of women from outside of the States will come and bring some noise!

will there still be a 5v5 SF4 regional exhibition?

At first I was thinking it was catering, but making them join the main tourney as part of the deal makes it legit. Nothing to complain about, good work.

I missed how requiring a girl to forfeit from the main tournament to play in this one makes it legit. Anyone care to shed some light?

Um… they don’t have to forfeit it.

They have to JOIN the main in order to ALSO enter the Girl’s tourney.

Meaning they have to play in both.

Also, I would personally like to see the tourney’s name changed to “The Strongest Woman in the World Tournament”.

By forfiet I mean glorified bye since the mentality of the tournament is that they can’t win anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

That is an awesome idea :woot:

Oh wait! That’s thinking for everybody  Solidarity FTW
