Hey guys, I’m EMERALDGIGASBUSTER (I wonder what kind of character I like to play) and recently I’ve delved into the world of Street Fighter IV as a local community are really into it and quite frankly I’m bored of League of Legends or whatever MMO I’m playing at the time. So far it’s going so well and I’m having some fun, getting some practice down and I can see myself getting into this for a while. But I have two questions.

  1. I am looking for some general guides on Street Fighter 4 that explain it’s mechanics, shortcuts, how to play the game blah blah. What’s a plink? What’s an option-select? etc etc. Is anyone able to find me something just to sit and read through?

  2. I always play powerhouse grapplers but I want to learn more about things like combos/links in Sf4. I understand this is a part in Zangief or T.Hawk (And hugo, soon) but I’m looking for a grappler archtype character who has a playstyle more based around these kind of things. Should I be trying to learn Abel or E.Honda?

for the first question, Vesper Arcade has an incredibly good guide about it,it’s arround 30 vids,it explains everythig, from what’s a stick to how to do option selects:

for the second one,if you want a grappler with combos…I don’t know man,Makoto has some sweet combos, good normals and a command grab but I wouldn’t call her a grappler, you can try Hakan for example, his fadc oiled combos are pretty fun.

Oh, I literally just meant to choose between E.Honda or Abel - Which one would be better for me to pick up and learn.

Find out yourself.

Abel’s game is mixup based, playing with his rekkas overhead/lows,command throws and footsies. I don’t know that much about Honda, but I think he is more defensive, using his ‘‘safe’’ (in most cases) specials and mixing with his command grab,so if you wanna be offensive pick Abel,if you wanna be a little more defensive pick Honda (btw Honda’s hand combos will make you learn how to pianoing and/or sliding due to hands combos)

I can Piano fine. I just don’t understand Sf4’s specifics.

I think I’m gonna choose Abel because Honda isn’t too much out of my comfort zone, so I won’t be learning as much.

combos will be the least of your concern when wondering if you’re using the char you should after you level up slightly.

I definitely agree. I’m essentially looking for a tool to learn the game more, outside of the characters I want to play, but while remaining similar.

That’s why I’m asking about Abel and Honda, they’re kinda similar to the grapplers but play so differently.

If you’re looking for a grappler with decent combos, Abel is probably your best best. His combo potential is getting buffed in Ultra as well; with his s.hp having its hitbox expanded his BnB will work on a lot more of the cast that it does currently.

excellent and quick series on the fundamental aspects of street fighter 2, which can be applied to SF4 as well. It’s a good series to complement with VesperArcade’s SF4 tutorial videos

Disregard

Welcome to SRK. Moving to the newbie dojo. Pick my character threads aren’t permitted in the SF4 section.

Most of your other questions can be answered by reading sticky threads in the relevant sections.

I don’t get why so many people disagree with this (and I really disagree with flagging this). If you’ve already narrowed your options to two characters you really should just try them out in training mode and in some real matches and make your decision based on that.

Probably because it doesn’t contribute anything to the conversation or provide the information the questioner is looking for.

It really just serves to communicate “I don’t feel like making an effort to help you, but I do feel like making the effort to give you a hard time”. Don’t be that guy. No one likes that guy.

I think it was sound advice that was maybe put a little bit too bluntly. The question that was asked has no real right answer and I think it’s legit to say that you need to find the answer yourself. Again, it could’ve been worded a bit differently (and being Finnish I might be a little too adjusted to bluntness) but I think that post actually added value to the conversation since no one else gave a similar answer.

I’ll stop derailing the thread now (especially since the answer was already found).

But it was the best advice in the whole thread. nothing anyone says will replace what would be gained from using them both and basing a choice on knowledge. Best advice would to not give the advice and let the author of the thread put the effort to learn it himself.

Well then we might as well lock this whole sub-forum and just leave in its place a sticky that reads “watch VesperArcade and just keep playing/practicing”. That really seems to be what all the advice in this sub-forum gets boiled down to sooner or later.

Sorry, I’ll go back to lurking now.

Id say between Abel and Honda that Abel plays like more of a grappler than Honda does. Even more than this i would say hes really mixup heavy, he really keeps your opponent guessing with roll mixups and command throws after step kicks and fadcs. He also has more ways to convert into combos and get in on your opponent. Honda, while he does not have a command through, does not really play like a conventional grappler. His main goal is less about putting his opponent into situations where they have to guess whether or not he will throw and more about general space control. He plays more footsies and turtles a more than abel does. Things like j.fr, st.fr, st.rh, and jab are really good tools for keeping good control of the neutral game, and if you can piano honda can easily convert any footsie jab into 200+ dmg by cancelling into hand slaps from jabs. While it does sound like abel is more up your alley honda may be worth keeping around as a secondary (especially if you can already piano).

Also, while it does sound like you are looking for a more extensive set of definitions a plink is a technique that makes combos easier by increasing the leniency with which moves can link into one another (this is an abridged definition), and an option-select is a technique where a move executed and there are multiple possible outputs that the game decides on. If you want to find out more terms there is a stickied section in the new dojo and im sure you could find a lot by simply googleing “fighting game terminology”?

Im sorry but no, it really was not the best advice given in the thread (that great honor goes to the guy that said that abel has more of a combo orientation earlier in the thread). Just saying “find out for yourself” is just a curbside fuck you to the asker, ffs its the newbie dojo!!! OP asked whether he should try out abel or honda for a grappler that also relies on links/combos. Abel plays in a style that is more similar to the archetype of the grappler than honda, relying more on his command throw for raw damage than honda, while also having more links and combo opportunities. Really simple question, really simple answer. Dont understand why I see so many people get ripped apart by users for asking simple questions, especially when the fucking motto is “no question is too basic here!”. smh…

Well for starters this thread wasn’t created in this section, it was moved here by a moderator.

Secondly, there really isn’t a better way to find out what character you have an aptitude for other than playing it yourself. Telling him that isn’t spam, nor tearing him apart.

Edit: The guy isn’t new to fighting games. They don’t hold your hand. A modicum of research will tell you what kind of characters Honda and Abel are. If that doesn’t make the decision between them clear, the objective best way to decide is by playing them himself. No amount of anecdotal storytelling or hug sessions will change that. Being blunt wasn’t intended to offend. That’s just literally the answer and I stand by it.

no question is too basic, but no answer is too basic as well. The correct answer IS play both and decide for yourself. Not only for the sake of not trusting others opinions that may steer you in a bad direction, but also since SF4 is so match-up heavy, if you know both, he will go farther if he decides to play in tournys. Facing a Juri player? Able does well vs Juri, but Honda tosses her in the rape van for free. Who’s advice is going to get him further? The guys who holds his hands and tells him who to play or the guy who pushed him to learn both.
