omg I don’t even know how to start, this is PURE GOLD. WOW. JUST FUCKING WOW.
thx for posting this. I watched parts 1-4 and read pages 1-4 of the thread LOL
I’ll check the rest later! thx thx thx for uploading this shit.
History Repeats and Evolves
I’ve been preparing for EVO 2k8 rather intensely these past few days or so. After a night of playing on GGPO, I start snooping around on SRK and find this thread. And it reminds me a lot of an old, legendary thread I posted in three years ago, just around this time of year, before EVO.

It’s absolutely beautiful because this thread pretty much picks up where the other thread ends. The first one is about jcasetnl reminiscing about the old school scene and everyone joining along.
I made a note of everything I liked in this thread, so I’m gonna touch on that.
I just thought the first part was really inspiring, and I think the second part can only be explained by the ferocity of the fighting game scene’s youth and long-lost magic only arcades can provide.
It’s educational and entertaining. Very nice find.
Man, that’s way cooler than any stories about my gaming handle(s).
This is something that was brought up in the Info on the Old School SF Scene thread. Challengers hunted down legends like Tomo and Osaki just so they could play them. That’s really what Street Fighter is all about: A bunch of grizzled, world-wandering warriors looking to become stronger and stake their claim.
It sounds like you got your drive’s worth; I would’ve gone with you.
Again, way cooler than any stories about my gaming handle(s). And it segues very well with what Choi says in this thread.
I’ve been studying/reading up on the history of American Street Fighter for about as long as I’ve been on SRK and the realization of rivalries evolving never occurred to me until Choi’s post.
I’ll always remember sitting in the first few front rows during the 3S Grand Finals at EVO 2k5 and the feeling the real, live energy of the crowd and the competitors. I hatched a stupid little plan about how me and some seatmates would start chanting “U-S-A!” if Justin Wong started losing (and we did, for a while; The Japanese players even started counter-chanting).
But what Seth says here goes right back to what Jumpsuit was saying about tournaments not having the same primeval fire.
I’ll admit it was the Daigo parry that pushed my passion for Street Fighter over the edge and into the competitive realm (And I don’t even play 3S competitively anymore though, heh).
I’ve been (trying to) securing my own place in Street Fighter history since then. Being in the EVO 2k5 Google video is a nice start. I dunno what it is, but I just like meeting people who are famous in their own communities (Got my picture taken with a lot of famous players last time, shit like that). And I did meet a lot of famous players at EVO2k5, though I doubt they’d remember me.
A brief memory would be watching some ST casuals on Cigarbob’s supergun and being surprised at watching Seth play for the first time. I stupidly ask a nearby Mike Watson, “Seth plays cross-handed??” only to get a nod in return.
Three years have passed since I posted in that Old School Scene thread and here I am again looking for more fame and blood at Evolution.
Thanks again to the old school for paving the way. Maybe I can do ya proud in SF IV or something.
PS: Justin Wong, Seth Killian, and Nuki are all in my ST pool this year. I’m looking forward to some great fights.
Thanks for posting the videos. I appear in at least the first one, wearing a red flannel shirt with NIN “fixed” t-shirt. Looks like I was going to play the Fei Long guy at the SSF2T machine near the end of part 1.
I can’t remember what round it was, maybe I won two or three matches before losing to Watson. Guess I lost again after that, but I don’t remember the details.
I still have the t-shirt from the tournament. Its around my house somewhere and in pretty good shape. Doesn’t fit any more though.
Caine
Hey I was in this tourny when I was 15 years old. Im in the third video at 2:55 being interviewed…

Does anyone know a guy named Jerry(I think)? A tall white dude that played Dhalsim, I used to play against him a lot at Cyber Station at the Golf Mill mall in Nile just north of Chicago. I think I eliminated him in this event.
I wonder if he still plays, he was a cool dude.
I used Guile only, maybe Blanka as well possibly. I cant remember the other people that I played or who I lost to. Maybe it was even someone on here.
Insane to see this though. Very glad to. =-)
Peace
Damn this thread is full of win
Thanks for the memories from 97 yall. Think I tied for 5th or something losing to Tom Cannons Oro trash and rocks and then DTs Alex low strong of doom.
And yeah Kris that was me in the room with you, O, Paul and someone else.
Good shit.
Awesome videos and thread. I’ll never be good enough to compete (though I am quite the Bomberman player), but it’s great to see this stuff.
:looney:
now thats a tourney story
this is just more proof that the uk arcade scene sucked. you guys looked like you were generally having a good time, no ego, no one stealing other peoples credits, no one taking shit too seriously…
Hey man think you could provide one big RS file download or something similar. Would be greatly appreciated.
Tournament Flyer
I found this flyer when I was going through a box of stuff in my garage:
Incidentally, I also have this t-shirt which was handed out to (top 12/some/all?) participants:
Does anybody collect this stuff?
Are u really selling that stuff?
How much?
I’m willing to sell the shirt and I’d include the original flyer. I don’t have a price in mind, so PM me. I’ve been moving this stuff around for 12-15 years and now I’m moving again. While it does have sentimental value, it is ultimately just clutter.
I am offering the SFA & SFA2 guides on eBay, and the auctions end in about a day so go look now. Search for “Street Fighter Alpha Guide” without the quotes. My eBay username is ‘titanarch’.
THanks!!! This the thread of the year!
