A typo on the box, huh? I was wondering why it claimed to support 1080i but not 1080p. That just didn’t make any sense.
Since my HDTV supports 720p, this is a non-issue for me. But I see how it can be a major deal to people with older HDTV’s.

1080i has the same level of detail (number of pixels) as 1080p, it just uses two vertical passes to draw a complete frame. For whatever reason, that makes it look less defined than progressive scan to the human eye. In this way 1080i is more or less equivalent to 720p, depending on a lot of external factors like source material, ambient light, etc.
Edit: Most games from the PSX era and earlier just skipped the 2nd pass of each frame on the 480i signal, resulting in ghetto 240p. So I can see how you might get the idea that Xi = 2*Xp.
