I’m meeting up with a guy to test out and buy his stick, going to try to talk him down a bit, maybe $20 or so.
He claims the stick is functioning but no word about damages to the body. About 100 hours of use on it.
Is this a good price? Or should I -really- stick to $80? I know there’s a guy on trading outlet selling a new SCV for $80 shipped, so there’s that I guess. Would prefer to do local though.
Not bad, but $80 is better. Also keep in mind then Viewlix layout (on the TE-S) vs. Noir layout (on SCV TE).
Alternatively, unless you specifically want the look, you can always go for a brand new MLG TE for $100, as per the thread that brought it up:
MLG look is meh but otherwise it seems ok. I’ll keep it in mind.
Another question, do sticks need a “breaking-in” period or are parts fine until they fail?
Parts are fine until they fail. You can “break in” your stick (I guess) if you treat it roughly, but generally people prefer their sticks feeling as new as possible in my experience. $100 is a bit excessive for a TE-S IMO if you’re buying it in person. However, if you really like it, go for it. I’d go with the SCV stick personally, but that’s just me.

You can usually get new ones for $100. I wouldn’t do $100 for used unless it was dual-modded or had other extras or was rare or something.
You get the SCV stick new for less than a 100$ on Amazon with free shipping.

I wouldn’t even pay 60 for a used stick and rather get a Q1 lol
Obviously, it’s hard to tell if the owner bought the stick new when it first came out (sold for $160 then), but the SCV has been selling new at $100 for a while now, and sold for $80 during several of the Road to EVO events and a few other majors that Mad Catz sponsored… That being the case, I’d be a little weary of paying more than $80 - And that’s being nice buying it at that price… Just tell him that you can buy it new for his asking price, and I’m sure he’ll be reasonable.
Thanks for all the help guys, I’ve decided against buying the used stick from this guy and am going ahead with FreedomGundam’s advice regarding the MLG stick.
I’ll just open the stick up when I get it and switch the buttons around for SF4 layout.
Remember that the MLG stick is still a standard TE-S stick, so the customizing possibilities are endless! You can remove that full face panel and replace it with a standard TE bezel, get various color TE or TE-S sides (all available from the MCZ store)… Plexis and Custom art… The possibilities are endless. That’s why I like the TE body so much.
$100 is way too much for a used TE period.
Also if you got a soul calibur stick and want a viewlix vs noir layout, I thought I saw Markman and someone else from Madcatz in the forums saying they could send you a viewlix style replacement top (metal) panel for those sticks.
Far as “breaking in the parts” the only thing I would be concerned about “wear-wise” would be the actuator on the stick but that’s easily replaced for a few dollars.
but again… these days $100 for used is WAY too much. Dude is smoking stuff he shouldn’t be askin’ that.
Do you remember where you saw that? I have a SCV and would love to get a viewlix panel
You could just order a plexi from Art’s Hobbies. It’s $18 base price.

Make sure that it’ll fit your stick before buying.
The plexi is meant to go over the actual metal panel, not as a substitute.

there are plexis that are thick enough to replace the original metal panel.
Art Hobbies does sell Plexy that are meant to be used as replacements
I own one installed on a TE-S
Found one at this hobby shop around the way for 40$. A ssf4 te stick with Stupid amounts of miles on it but i bought it for my brother replaced all button and joystick and dual modded it. All in all i spent about 150-165
Not bad, not bad at all. I like how you are giving a old stick new life and going the DIY route.
